IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Previous Thread >>>>3741154

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead
2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller
3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance when you haven't even started

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

Strange question but directed at digital illustrators/fine arts types, what would you say are the best brush sizes to use for a piece? I have this constant issue where I can't find a good combination of sizes so I have a small brush for fine details and a thicker brush for major linework without it looking too thick, I can't seem to get that balance and I figure this would be the best place to ask so any help, online tutorials, images, anything to help me with this issue so I can get closer to pic related would be absolutely invaluable to me and much appreciated.

You can do better than that
Instead of having fun with titties how about you work on how the neck, shoulders and the head look in relation to titties

ok well the first thing i would say is that thats two drawings not one and finish the first before you start the second, the next is that your background isn't a midtone its a bit too dark, and the last thing would be that you seriously need to work on the face, since its in photoshop you can cheat and do all kinds of things to the composition so just look at reference and do what you need to to make that face not look shit. the good part of this drawing is the hips and thighs.

Much of it is boring, some is just unappealing.
You seem to be focusing on training your perspective, which in all of your pieces is your best attribute. However, good perspective doesn't do diddly if you don't train your understanding of composition, color theory, lighting, or organic forms.
"a gathering" is your best piece so far since you actually attempted to explore light/dark contrasts, with an okay color scheme. Even the composition is better than all your other pieces as it kinda leads my eye around. All that said, it's still pretty shit compared to what you need to get noticed.
Practice drawing small thumbnails with basic shapes filling the space instead of explicitly drawing in objects or details. You're eye for composition will benefit from this.
Practice making many fast paintings with strict color schemes, and paint with those colors with a large textured brush utilizing only less saturated (grey toned) versions of your colors in most of the canvas, while reserving the saturated versions for the focal points of the image. Communicate your idea abstractly with your use color, and composition, and only then define it with details.
I scratched out a simplified version of one of your other pieces. While the rendering of detail is not as advanced as in your original, pay attention to how I used less to communicate more. The circular lighting that leads the eye around the character, back to the face, and how I remove distractions from the viewer. This took me 10 minutes, and you should be painting these kind of fast easy color keys to see if your piece is visually appealing when viewed at a glance before you commit to defining any detail in the scene.

It honestly depends how fast you realize the big ideas, people practice for years without understanding drawing 3d forms, gesture, and perspective. All of them can be learned in a month or so for someone who understands and practices them effectively.

The best way to practice is to learn the 3 mentioned topics above, and keep attempting to put them into practice from simple to complex. After that, learning to draw things takes a few days of study to do passably. You wont be a master for years, but it doesn't sound like you're asking for that.

Don't just distort your boxes randomly on a blank canvas. Draw some 3d grids and put your object in perspective, then you can distort it as much as you want.
The point of drawing boxes, and other 3d shapes is to be learn how to place a 3 dimensional object in a 3 dimensional space. Drawing on blank paper (when you're just beginning) will lead to you distorting your objects, and worse, you will not learn how to believably place your objects in an environment.

You should try working on your brushwork. nothing wrong with staccato brushwork but you aren't using it in a way that helps to clearly define the form of what you're drawing, so it just looks haphazard and lazy. Its' probably symptomatic of you overall line confidence while drawing in general. It doesn't look like your sure enough about the information your'e trying to put down, or your ability to record it, to make any long, accurate and impressive strokes.
Those eyes look like straight up symbols, instead, keep in mind the folds, peaks, valleys and the 3D sphere underneath the skin that make up an eye. The same thing goes for the lips, think about the forms and planes , less about the fact that this is a mouth, or these are lips or this is an eye.
Measure your reference more accurately, that neck looks like a tree trunk compared to the rest of the drawing, especially in comparison to the body.
Work on your forms, keep in mind that everything in your drawing should have a front, sides, a bottom, a top. I can see that in the overall from of the head, for the most part, but everything from the chin down is a flat mess.

Good luck anon.

Focus on using a full rage of values. Right now your drawing only reaches a ~60% grey instead of black, so it lacks depth.
The shadows in her face lack nuance. Most of it is the same value as the background gray, with little variation, so her face sort of disappears into the background. This may have to do with the lighting of your reference picture.
You also depend on using lines to convey detail in her facial features in hair, rather than nuanced shadows. It's jarring and detracts from the feeling of form.

-clean up your paper, if you draw like a caveman you're going to get stressed out.
-Draw small first(thumbnail drawing) it makes it easier to work out ideas and get a good composition so you don't waste time, energy, paper/materials on a large drawing just for it to suck.
- practice line exercises
- don't erase or use a pen especially starting off, forces you to think before you draw instead of throwing random lines down erasing all the time.
- stop drawing from imagination off the bat, practice blind contour and learn to draw what you see (book: keys to drawing). Learn about construction at the same time so you can learn to draw from imagination(books:perspective made easy and fun with a pencil).

learn to draw what you see and learn construction and you'll be on your way.

Depends on genetics whether a "thigh gap" exists, but more wrong with the picture if insertion points.

On her right (your left) leg, the hamstring should insert at the hip bone, not at the bottom of the butt.
On the other leg the thigh should insert closer to the abdomen.

Chest insertion should connect to the front deltoid, not the collar bone. Neck is too short, traps are therefore too small.
Bones get longer are the ends of arms/legs, not shorter.
Even for 90s anime eyes are too big.

TLDR; learn more anatomy.

Make the wolf a different colour to the background. Either saturate the wolf with more bright colours or make the ground a warm colour.

The actual detailing seems fine.
Maybe redo the blood too, the blood should follow the contours of the fur, not be splatted flatly on top.

I like the palate, seems to be a decent understanding of light and shadow (some still missing).

Missed some 3D forms I'd say. Eye should be closer to the nose and slightly rotated more to form that strong contour from the nose to brow.

Apart from placement, eye still isn't 3D. Deeper shadow under brow ridge and below the eye + painting in the bottom of the top eyelid would make it "pop".

Potential here for sure.

It normal takes hours to draw a single portrait so kind fucked there my friend.

> Is copying enough?
If you want to get good at copying I guess (you're not btw).

For starters in the future pick a picture that's not been awkwardly resized (entire thing is squished horizontally).

If you want to invest the MINIMAL amount of eyes, you need to MAXIMISE the time by working smart.

This means basically you don't draw for fun, you spend your extremely limited time doing studies on 3D forms, construction and lighting.

That is, if you have 5 hours in a week, spend half an hour learning/reviewing theory, 2 1/2 hours grinding studies, 2 hours doing a portrait, repeat.
It's boring af.

I still think your understanding of lighting has a ways to go.

Between the lips and nose, those ridges should have soft shading (not hard white lines).

If the bottom of the nose is fully lit, everything in the same plane should be lit too.

It seems like you're mixing shadow and light values which makes it not appear 3D.

Her right eye (viewers left) is still too large.

You're right, both eyes are still missing the 3D affect. Should be able to see the bottom of the top lid and top of bottom lid.

Also that "V" down her neck seems wrong.

Like there is such a thing as a "proven" way to improve. My opinion is if you really want to improve decide what you want your goal to be and then lay out the steps to get there yourself. No point walking someone else's path if you're not a 100% sure it's where you want to go. Point is, you should be smart enough to set you're own milestones to accomplish whatever it is you want. So if you want to be able to draw realistically, break that skill down into its general components like perspective, form, light, ect and then break those individual parts down to something your able to study and practice. That way your artwork and studying will have direction and clear signs of what you need to improve like if you notice your lines are shaky you can shift focus to fix it; plus you'll hopefully wont be unhappy because you aren't aimlessly trying to do what others say is the "best" way to improve in an attempt to "just get good".

I believe the dynamic exercises are pretty much where it's at when it comes to proactive practice. I'd probably say just do a few practice DS warmups everyday before you start then move on to your actually drawing/studying practice. Like going to the gym you aren't going to see any amazing gains immediately, they're kinda there to keep you "fit" in a sense and you wont be able to graph your progress of straight improvement right away but when you look back a month, 6 months, a year from now you'll definitely be able to see a difference. But on the subject of alternatives there should be enough variance in exercises in dynamic sketching/i think drawabox that you can cycle through each day, you probably don't want to be trying to do every exercise everyday unless that's really something your super autistic about.

Skin isn't just flat warm tan and pinks, it has blues and greens as well. Your colors are too superficial and flat.
You need reflected light plains on the underside of the ass curve.
Ass silhouette is denty and pointy in spots, smooth those curved edges.
Labia crease is lopsided to begin with, but you pushed it farther. It looks like a mistake because yours is not a photo, push it more towards the ideal center.

Shadows in real life reverse the color temperature of the light source. The light source in your image is warm, and it creates a cooler color in the shadow plain.

Colors are relative, so they can be very close together due to having similar saturation, but it's important to pay attention and start seeing the distinction between color temperatures on an object across light to shadow plains.

This video from Marco Bucci explains it well. The whole series is worth watching.

Unlike the previous pic, the edges here are fluid - see the dark areas of the figures, how they blend into the shadows. So since you aren't serious and since humans like to overestimate, you should take whatever you think the outcome of your practice is going to be and then lowball it by like 40% and that's probably what will come out of it.
