You ton't be able to freehand anything if you don't practice perspective a lot first. He clearly hasn't. Also that sketch was not simple at all, the forms were quiet tricky to draw in perspective even for experienced artist. Drawing perspective grid takes no more than 30 seconds.

You don't have to meticulously map out all of the VPs to do a rough freehand block-in of the ground plane. That's kind of the point of the exercise, to build and develop your intuition.
The photo even has paneled flooring too, which would make it even easier to do.

1 Draw HL

2 Draw lines towards Left VP

3 Copy paste, mirror, stretch horizontally to make Right VP (that way HL is mantained)

Talent isn't a myth.

Jk but he probably practiced like a mong not thinking hard about shit and just drawing to get the 1.5 hours done. Thats why people recommend getting a mentor and being active in good drawing communities so if youre not picking up on this someone else will.

>> No.3973912

Too much reliance on reference and not enough practice from imagination. His still lifes and nature drawings are honestly legitimately good. His row of paintings of women from ref aren't half bad either. But what we see here is tons and tons of grinding all sorts of subjects that aren't his goal of animu girls. He has tons of drawings of forms, but not so many of characters. Drawing 50 cylinders and cubes won't teach you how to draw an appealing stylized human being.
His progress is an example of how while grinding fundies is important, they aren't a substitute for actually studying the subjects you want to draw. Fundies won't teach you how to draw anime, sadly.

You won't make much progress with 1.5 hours a day if you're not smart enough to know how to judge and critique your own artwork. Which is why it looks like he drew shit at mostly the same level for 5 years. You can go a long time making the same mistakes if you don't try to learn from better artists/instructors.

>Drawing fundamentals don't apply to drawing anime because reasons
Lol. The fundamentals apply to everything you draw, that's why they're called the fundamentals. Anime figures are just simplified/exaggerated caricatures of real people so there's no fucking way you can pretend that real figure drawing doesn't apply to that without sounding like an idiot trying to cope.

The bigger question is why didn't he didn't even actually git gud at observational drawing, the most foundational drawing skill, despite practicing it for 5 years. You can't blame that on relying too much on reference because being good at drawing what you see is the entire point.

>> No.3973936

>>3973931
Fundamentals apply, but you don't become amazing at drawing landscapes because you've mastered how perspective and form works. You git gud at drawing X by drawing that thing.

No amount of fundamentals will actually give you the ability to draw appealing drawings, because drawing appealing drawings is in itself a skill that needs to be learned in addition to fundamentals.

Take sycra for example, he more or less mastered fundamentals, but because he only mastered fundies without mastering appeal it results in some gross mash of triangles.

>while grinding fundies is important, they aren't a substitute for actually studying the subjects you want to draw. Fundies won't teach you how to draw anime, sadly.
Fundies are good, you need them, but being good at fundies =/= being good at anime.

>> No.3973961

>>3973936
I must practice the "fundamentals" differently than you guys because I do that by drawing things that are similar to what I want to draw and that I know I will use in my own artwork, which is literally every drawing I do that's not an original piece. For example if I wanted to get better at the fundamentals used in drawing landscapes I would go outside and find a good view and draw it or I would do a study of a master painting.

>>3973937
Being good at "fundies" means that you have a solid understanding of drawing things in general. Drawing anime characters doesn't exist in a vacuum where everything else you learn about drawing doesn't apply to it. I understand what you're saying that you have to practice drawing stylized anime characters to really learn how to become good at it, that's very true because its a specific style and subject. But its not so different from figure drawing from life that everything you learned from doing that no longer applies and won't make you better at drawing anime. It will if you apply it to your anime drawings.

>> No.3973967

>>3973961
the problem with just using fundamentals in practice with your normal drawings is you don't get the repetitions in.
doing x point perspective in your drawing is good practice, but you can only do so many complete drawings a day. you can do 1000s of perspective exercises in a day to drill it in, in a variety of different angles.

I can draw a drawing, and maybe, if i'm trying hard, it'll have maybe 6 hands in it. And I'll finish that in a day at best, more likely a few days.
If i was grinding hands though I could draw hundreds of hands, doing many different things.

>> No.3973978

>>3973967
That's a fair point, and you're correct. Perhaps I wasn't being clear as I try to do the same thing - my point is that most of what I draw isn't just random stuff. I identify what I really need to work on right now that will take my original art to the next level and focus on that for maybe a couple weeks. Right now its head drawing. I'll do quick sketches of whole heads, many sketches of individual parts I feel I need to work on, and then a couple of longer more careful studies/copies from reference or a master artwork to apply what I learn as if I'm doing an original piece. Then after that I try to create an original artwork based on those concepts I'm learning when I feel ready. I feel this is a good method.

>> No.3973982

You can absolutely (probably) learn to draw without doing a single fundies drill in your life. I mean I've never done it. Too boring, leads to discouragement.

THE FUNDAMENTALS AND STYLIZATION ARE DIFFERENT SKILLS
YOU HAVE TO PUT WORK INTO DRAWING FROM IMAGINATION AND DRAWING STYLIZED PEOPLE, ANIMALS, THINGS, WHATEVER.
THIS IS WHY PEOPLE GO TO SCHOOL FOR SPECIFIC FIELDS. DRAWING ANIME IS A SKILL, CALARTS IS A SKILL, DISNEY IS A SKILL.

I'll be honest with you it doesn't look like he applies his fundies to his cartoon drawings very much. I bet he thinks anime girls are divorced from the real life fundamentals, so he doesn't try to apply them in that situation and just tries to BS it.

Sounds fucking weird, but given the amount of people on this board who unironically think that way too, it's not unprecedented; it's the only real explanation I can think of for this because his referenced stuff actually looks real good.

Ironic shitposting was always a thing, though it was less of a standard.

As for political content, messages were similar, but nowhere near as serious. The edge had more obviously humorous intent ("lol Hitler was a great guy, amirite?"). There was more targeting of "gangsta" culture vs directly condemning black people. People used "Jew" to poke fun at penny-pinching behavior vs decrying the liberaldeepstatebenghazishadowgovernmentilluminatimainstreammediareptiles. I blame media companies (and subsequently angry old people) catching up with the internet.

Also, seemingly regardless of political preferences, people on 4chan and similar sites were all pretty much in agreement on "lol Bush". It was a very unifying sentiment at the time.

It helps to know human anatomy to being able to draw the human body accurately. Most nip artistes are trained to being able to draw the right and they draw the left as a form of escapism from their miserable lives.
