Here are my tips for the following:

DA - post your work onto over 100 groups. It's time consuming, but it's the most guarantee out of everything listed here to get you followers.

Twitter - socialize a bit in discussions. A lot of artists use twitter to ask questions or to bring up topics and it's a good way to respond and get noticed. Once you start getting a few re-tweets you're pretty much set. Now just wait to get lucky and have something re-tweeted by someone with a lot of followers.

Tumblr - bandwagon onto something currently popular and use their hashtags.

Instagram - ?

Facebook - ?

!!MOST IMPORTANTLY!!, post FREQUENTLY and stay active as possible. If you ever wondered "how did that artist who draws like a 6th grader get so many followers?" More than likely they post something new every day of the month.

If you have any tips for gaining followers on specific social medias, please post.

Oh hey that's my post! Glad it was helpful.

To add to it around the time I shared that I had around 2000 followers and was averaging 400-600 likes per post, whith some that got close to or even over 1k.

More recently (1-2 months ago) I noticed my engagement took a huge hit, to the point where I was lucky if I got 200 likes, and less than 1k of my followers were even seeing my work.

I started using fewer hashtags (10-15 instead of 30) and avoiding the largest "promo" hasthags (#artpromote, #pencilacademy, those kind), favoring instead hashtags that more accurately fit my posts.

I also started using my stories more to try and get my followers more involved, with polls, questions, etc.

I'm now back at getting 400-600 likes per post, and that's without doing the "liking multiple posts" thing, which means I'm not forcing extra views to my profile, so if your engagement has dropped, give that a shot and see if it helps!

Also, as soon as I hit 5k followers a couple weeks ago, I saw a significant spike in new followers (pic related). From 3-5 followers a day to 25-35 by doing absolutely nothing different than what I used to. I don't know if it's because the algorithm has caught up with my recent daily posting habit, because people see 5k followers and are like "he's good enough for 5k people, I'll follow him", or because IG starts promoting accounts more when they hit 5k followers, but I thought it was interesting.

honestly it's just posting really high quality, professionally shot stuff
instagram is the most meritocratic platform of the bunch

>> No.3988850

>>3988457
>>3988843
Actually not really, yes it's meritocratic in the sense that people will like the best presented work but you also have to use bots on Instagram. It doesn't matter if you are really good, you have to use bots to cheat the algorithm in order to appear at the top of the pages and on other people's profiles so they can follow you. There is no real network, it's all numbers. Most of your likes will be other people botting and randomly selecting your posts through hashtags.
On Twitter you don't have any of that and you have to suck up to other artists so that they retweet you. If you are less popular than someone else they will not retweet you because you don't have a following they can dip their toes into so you're kinda fucked.
Social media is shit.

>> No.3988894

>>3988800
Nice! And you're not really looking for larger accounts, in fact you should aim for smaller ones.

Large ones probably won't see the notifications or won't bother checking who followed them, so you won't get much out of that.

But smaller accounts are more interested in people liking their stuff and are more likely to give you a follow, especially if you're decent at what you do.

To get larger accounts to notice you the best way is to just genuinely interact with them, I had a few people I looked up to follow me back just because I commented on some of their posts or joined a hashtag they started.

Btw, an account's followers are listed by most recent, so just go in order because chances are the most recent ones will be newer accounts looking for people to follow, and more importantly they'll be active accounts.

>> No.3988906

Only social media nubs think in terms of how to get more followers.

Followers are meaningless if they aren't actual fans of your work. More specifically, engagement rate is a much more important metric than raw follower numbers. An account with 10k followers but a .5% engagment rate is not nearly as good as a 1000 follower account with a 10% engagement rate. A good engagement rate helps your account naturally grow on many different types of sites. Too many followers and a low engagement rate is not good for modern social media algorithms, which are relevancy based. I'm other words, a post made by an account with lots of followers that gets poor engagement will be lower in people's feeds, while a smaller account with more active engagements from fans will appear higher.

It's one of the reasons buying followers is a massive waste of money, and why social media groups are not a good idea to join. Followers should not start following you for any other reason than the fact that they genuinely enjoy your work.

>Instagram
Use lots of relevant hashtags and tag any groups/reposters you're interested in. Also, make use of Stories and make sure to add it to your highlights once it has expired. Understand that Instagram does not (and will not) set its feed to display in reverse chronological order. Everyone relies on its algorithm for post positioning in peoples' feed, which can make it harder to build audience.

>Facebook
Join groups. Facebook has said it will de-emphasize the news feed and emphasize groups, particularly private groups. It has already launched its ad campaign promoting. This isn't to say you shouldn't post to your page; however, news feed visibility, which is already a non-priority on smartphones, will be pushed further down the priority list. If you're so bold, start your own group. All of this said, Facebook currently isn't really the best platform for sharing your art; however, groups, which are supposed to bring people with common interests together, could make it a better option.

I don't really participate in trends much, but if you're on twitter make sure to follow other artists to keep in the loop.

There are usually surges in popular tags and characters that you can post to. E.g. nessa from pokemon blew up, before that bowsette blew up. You'll see people jump on the bandwagon. It's a good opportunity to get noticed. Nintendo related stuff are usually a huge audience on twitter, but overall E3 is good in general as well. You get new things you can contribute to around this year.

Make sure you're researching your hashtags. Some of them are very popular, especially ones curated by high profile people.

It doesn't matter if you draw porn or not, it's not about jealousy, porn is not art, just like a pornstar isn't an actress. If you want career advice on acting you might take advice from a Hollywood actor, an independent actor, a theater actor, but you would never ask the opinion of a pornstar because it's a different career and it's not acting. I hate pornfags but even if I didn't it would still be true that porn is not art.

I hate it so much when people speak about things from their warped, out of touch perspective because all they draw is pokemon porn but they think it's art. You should not give advice to artists who draw anything other than porn. At least specify "I draw porn" so I can ignore your post instead of asking if you draw porn.

Really there should be separate threads for artists and pornfags, as it is it makes no sense to discuss social media, career, patreon or anything else because pornfags are out of touch and they think they're artists.

I've gotten randomly shadowbanned too. I think it's the use of hashtags that sometimes get lewd content posted in it, like #anime or #animegirl. Or just if someone decides to report you for not using the right hashtags. It sucks, but it'll go away in a couple weeks. This is a good time to work on something really good, and in the meantime post lower effort doodles. This slightly works, but not entirely. Probably because my speciality is drawing in a niche that is very hard to find with accounts that reach 20k. Found 2 accounts only that had 20k+, and did this. Did this for hundreds of accounts with 1k to 9k, for two days, gained only 10 follows. I'm not a beginner either, most people say I'm either advanced or intermediate, several even think I'm "professional" (opinions mostly from strangers), but most called me advanced, for my niche anyway. My only other suspicion is that I'm doing this on furfag accounts when I don't draw humanoid anthro furries, I actually draw normal four legged animals or occationally Lisa Frank inspired stuff. Do furries not like animal art unless it has tits and a human body or something? I'd imagine girls don't care and like anyone who draws animals, furry or not.

Yeah I never engage with real conversations either. I only respond to stuff that warrants a "thank you" or "i know right" kind of response. But do keep posting stories. If you consistently post, people will watch them. When people watch them, your account becomes more relevant to them, so the Instagram algorithms will boost your content in your followers' feeds. Stories don't help you get followers, but it helps you keep the ones you have.

Try posting poll/rating stories too, because ones where your followers directly interact supposedly reaaally helps with algorithm boosting. It doesn't even have to be thoughtful haha, sometimes I'll just post a picture of my cat with the poll options "yes" and "yes" and lots of people engage.

As many as you can handle?
Like most things, it's better to focus on a selected few big ones, but if you feel like a social media genius you can take them all simultaneously.

It doesn't apply to you if you only draw for yourself. If you want feedback,if you want money from your craft/make a living, if you want validation, if you want recognition, etc... That's currently one of the most practical paths to take.
>>4000348
It matters but it isn't the only factor : if you're the best of the world but nobody knows it, you won't magically have your wikipedia artist page. You need to learn marketing/promoting too.

I gave up on social media, I still post something every now and then but I don't care about growing a following online anymore. I think only certain things work on social media unless your original work is of mind-blowing quality and of super broad appeal and even in that case it takes like a decade to find a following big enough to make a living. So I'll try to just get good enough and get a job through traditional channels.
Honestly I gave up on the idea of making this as a career a long time ago.

I swear to god there are so many absolute shit webcomics on instagram and they're all popular, I'm so fucking sick of it. The normies don't care if the art is terrible but the jokes are also shit. I know low effort content is by nature more popular because all you have to do is be relatable and post frequently (both of which are easy with the horrible quality most of these are) but it still gets to me.

At least I still have an ounce of passion left in me though, but I am getting a little too addicted to wanting attention. At the end of the day the work I'm doing is for myself/for fun and any popularity/money I get from it is an added bonus.

listen to the second annon. If you see a trend with crappy artists you, for this example a good artist, should jump in on it and blow everyone out of the water. You'll be a big fish in a small pond. You'll impress the normies even more. You don't even have to put in your all just put half your effort, if you're a good artist, and people will still be impressed. This is a dream come true not some dumb thing to be salty over.

Look how insane the webcomic model looks when you explain it:
>You draw popular stuff and learn marketing skills unrelated to art so that you get bored people browsing social media and are not interested in your actual original content to follow you.
>This takes several years in most cases.
>When you have enough people who follow you for things unrelated to your original work, you pitch them your original work.
>Your comic has to be derivative of the things that got your uninvested audience to follow you.
>Your comic has to be safe and broadly appealing because you're aiming at the broadest possible chunk of the vaguely invested people who follow you.
>Part of your vaguely invested audience might be vaguely invested in your comic and might bother reading it for free.
>To those people who read the comic for free you ask that they give you a dollar out of the kindness of their heart.
>This is in the hopes that a percentage of those vaguely invested readers are invested enough, have money to waste and/or personally care about you as a person to the point where they give you a dollar every month.
>You are bound to this comic and this audience for eternity.

As opposed to
>You make a comic and put a nice cover on it and a price tag.
>Person already on the website/comic shop with the intention of buying a product sees the product that you're selling.
>He buys your comic.
>If your comic was good, that person will buy your next comic.

I'm sure that webcomics give you more money on average when you have a large audience but if you're starting from zero it sounds like madness to me.

Is there a social network that isn't cancer like DA that still allows lewd art?

I like doing semi-realistic drawings of nude women with charcoal and would really like to be able to post them somewhere that isn't just a file/image sharing service.

>> No.4005761

Da is still fine men, don't aviod potential places. Just make sure to stay firm in your position. If you go for shit you find shit, if not, then you dont, as easy as that. Even if you don't like the web for whatever reason, you just have to upload, care about a web is pointless anyway, is not like you are going to marry with a website...
Upload there, and done. Go for the next one, you don't have to deal with the people, just respond to the nice people and is all fine.
For simple nude things no porn, you can almost everywere, officialy you can in twitter and newgrounds, pixiv. You can in facebook and instagram, but you just need to put a bikini to a woman and you can put whatever you want, is that easy. Even if is lewd, if you put minimal clothes, every web is a option unless is a really explicit shit.

I'm running out of ways to say "Thank you! I really appreciate the kind words / comment." I have a few people who regularly comment on my posts so I don't wanna sound disingenuous from making basically the same reply at them every time. How else can I phrase gratitude?

I try to be personal with my followers by giving hypey replies like “Aaaaa ur so sweet” and “Thank u so much gorgeous!” But that mainly works if you’re a girl artist and have already already established that kind of online personality

>> No.4008305

>>4008280
haha I am a girl, but I don't like that kind of persona. It's too hyper and personal for me. It does seem like a lot of popular artists talk like that and their fans are into it though.

Sweet is a good word, I could definitely write "That's so sweet of you to say!" Thanks, anon.
