How do I draw when I'm depressed and enjoy nothing? I can't get inspired by anything. Even just holding a pencil takes too much effort. But I don't want to waste the next few months / years while the doctors stabilize my medications. I want to keep working on art in the hope that one day I will enjoy it again, even if I can't right now.

Purposefully dont draw, then at least you will be successfully not drawing

Unless you can’t even avoid drawing, what a fucking failure

Out of respect, and not to waste your time, I'm going to be direct.

- Why are you asking this here on 4chan?
- What do you expect to hear?
- Will you follow any sensible advice given, or just do what fits your frame of reference, what suits you?
This is not the best place to ask such questions. You might get answers, but it won't be professional help. You see a doctor,
do you also see a psychiatrist or anyone with professional experience who might help you better?
Any advice from here will at best be generic, as we know nothing about you, your background, your personality, your problems.

You come here expecting some kind of answers - everybody has expectations. How do you think any advice given will differ from
what you can think of yourself?

If the advice differs from what you were expecting, will you still try to follow it? If you feel like it doesn't fit you or you think it's too
hard, then what will it help?
Honestly, if your livelihood doesn't depend on it, don't do it. It's dumb. You are not well. Get better first. It's like this:

"Doctor, my leg is broken, but while I wait for my leg to heal, I still want to go jogging. What shall I do?"

"Well, bloody don't."

If you're going to force it, it will be worse. Just leave it until you're ready.

If you absolutely must have an answer, do something that requires a minimum amount of mental input, and is very easy to start.

- Read some books about art. Just pick it up and read when you feel like. Put it down when you don't.
- Learn new art techniques or new software. Don't pay attention to the creative part, just mess about and get a feel for the medium, get technical experience.

In both cases, you are not doing anything creatively, but you build up knowledge and technical experience you can apply when you do feel good enough to be creative.

I've been stuck in this for awhile so I started getting myself into drawing with just ink and paper and focusing less on making something finished and polished and more on practicing one of my skills, in this case line weights. I've been making some neat pieces doing it, it's helped me relax because I can just lose myself in a kinda mindless drawing, and it becomes more about turning some lines into something rather than making something clear from your head.

As with anything with depression the best course of action is to tell depression to fuck off and push through it even though you really don't fucking want to.

Don't force yourself to draw if you really don't feel like it. If you do you will end up associating the drawing process with stress and negative emotions. Work on fixing you depression first and then draw. If you are mentally stable (not prone to psychosis) and you have no family history of shizophrenia, consider experimenting with taking psychedelics like LSD or Psilocybin. It might work miracles for your depression, as it did for me. Be safe though and make sure to do your research first.
