When drawing with your elbow/shoulder, do you keep your wrist fixed? I noticed when drawing circles I do both elbow/shoulder and a bit of wrist rotation, and then tried keeping my wrist fixed. Seems like you have more control over the lines if it's fixed, but it's kind of counter intuitive and less flowy. Watchathink?

In CSP, is there anyway that I can blend or smudge pencil lines without making it look like the silliest digital artifact you've ever seen?

Pic related. If I were doing this in traditional pencil, I would just smudge the neck area a bit to blend the lines where they "intersect", but if I try to do it in CSP it comes out looking like she's melting.

Help please anons?

When drawing with your elbow or shoulder you keep the wrist fixed. That's just how it works. The three methods are just tools, to be used depending on the context.

Shoulder (elbow restricted, wrist locked), for when you want:
> long lines
> to cover large areas
> smoother, long curves
> to be more spontaneous

Wrist (elbow restricted, shoulder forgotten), for when you want:
> finer detail and motion
> smaller marks

Elbow: somewhere in between.

All that said, "less flowy" seems weird to me. I think what you're experiencing is a lack of experience drawing from the shoulder, and are therefore feeling constrained. In fact, when drawing from the shoulder, lines are much more flowy, and you can be pretty spontaneous with your motions when drawing from the shoulder. For example, if I'm drawing long strands of hair, I don't want to be drawing from the wrist because I'm thinking too much about where I'm going next.

So keep practicing drawing from the shoulder or the elbow, but don't fall into the trap of thinking that you should ALWAYS do that. There's a time and place for every tool available to you. You just need to learn where to use them.

I feel I should know this by now. But what does author of this video uses for creating smooth selections for ambient occlusion at around 1 minute mark. Is it just lasso tool? Because I feel that using lasso tool is making edge of selection too wobbly and using other stuff like magic wand make edge look kinda pixilated.
Also is there any good videos/tutorials/guides on edge control in ps?

How the hell do you understand form? I've been trying to construct shit out of boxes to get the depth, and while that's working I can't seem to synthesize the construction and gesture, or draw the forms properly using those boxes without them looking horribly stiff and geometric.

Reading Vilppu I tried his approach, but adding anything not boxlike and trying to combine those soft forms I end up losing the depth and it gets flatter as a result.

I'm sorry but I don't think this helps. KJG can pretty much shit out anything he wants because his visualization and mileage are years ahead.

I've been trying to do the stuff he talks about frequently (breaking things down into simple shapes, trying to rotate those shapes in my head, etc.) but I end up losing the gesture and the motion and it ends up very stilted, like a building.
Conveying those basic shapes I'm already doing, but anything beyond that and I don't know how to map it to those without it getting lifeless and robotic.

My drawings lack that life that goes into the more rounded complex forms, like the subtle curvature of a limb or that lifeline carried through a figure, but whenever I attempt gesture or using anything other than those solid simple shapes, it looks like a flat symbol drawing because I'm trying to avoid that roboticism that comes with my boxes.

You can start with watercolor, get a koh i noor pan set (pic related, it's very cheap but really good) and a few cheap brushes. You can watch Marco Bucci's tutorials on youtube for more tips on watercolor painting. It's really fun doing small sketches and it teaches you a lot about the warm-cool relationship in a composition. The paper might be expensive but you don't need the best one when starting out. Now don't take my word for granted, some say watercolor isn't beginner friendly, but other options might be more expensive. I guess you can try it out and see how it goes. Hope I helped

And then if I want to change the lens from 60 degrees to 90 degrees for example would move the station point up closer until 45 degrees intersects with the horizon line at the edge of the main paper.
I think.

What I've noticed with the CC is that it's slow as shit on a cold boot (not recently used) but almost instant closing and reopening with it still in cache. I think it's how it handles scratch drive allocation seemingly all up front.

Is better markmaking/linework just something that comes with mileage? I keep finding it difficult to get the forms right on my first go; usually it ends up sketchy or scratchy at first and I gotta go over it a second time to make it cleaner, or it looks disproportionate if I really commit to doing it in only one go.

Which of those two approaches is a better method? Committing and risking making the wrong marks, or doing a shitty scratchy sketch first and going over afterwards?

Maintenance manuals, and looking up how a car works on wikipedia, they're fairly simple, you got an engine that gives power to the drive shaft, which rotates gears in the differential which rotate the drive wheels, the transmissiom determines what gears to use. It's the same for every car, some are different mid engine, 4x4, etc. The concept stays the same though.

I understand scratchy as like a little kid feathering a line because they aren't confident. Sketchy i understand and almost like a rounded gesture.

Does anybody know of a good pencil brush for CSP? Real Pencil is pretty good, but it doesn't take into account the direction that I'm drawing in. I think the four most important aspects of a pencil would be:

1. texture
2. pressure sensitivity for opacity
3. tilt
4. some feather, especially tilted

The issue I have with 100% of the pencils I tried is that the tilt doesn't take into consideration the direction that I'm drawing in. So it tilts just fine, but when I draw perpendicular to the tilt it doesn't taper.

Can somebody please help? I don't know enough about brush settings to be able to pull this off myself.
