What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. Vivec's "split" should happen in the middle of his mouth, not the right. Actually, the left part of his face (our right) looks like it's melting. I know you're trying to pull perspective and that's good because you're avoiding the symbol drawing trap but that's not really how you do it.

Fortunately, your wonky way of doing anatomy fits Vivec's design way better than Asuka's. Despite all of the critiques you've got, you still draw weirdly shappen humanoids so I guess that's actually what you're going for, your "style". I would advice either to really work on your anatomy OR to just go with it and draw more off-the-wall characters and go crazy with it.

Even if I cover the face, this drawing is still unappealing.
Don't get me wrong, I find it pretty well done, but it's not "cute". As it stands I see it as a mix of old timey Looney Tunes with some Rat Fink.

I suggest investing in being more minimalistic. Just like how drawing lines on a face will make it old, certain shape choices makes your cartoon look too uncanny.

Exercise 1 - draw this same body with as few lines as possible - then consider carefully what you want to add back in;
Exercise 2 - copy some artists who do this sort of stuff and try to compare with your own.
Exercise 3 - find some art you like in this style, but try not to look at it in detail. Draw the same character before and THEN compare with yours, seeing what was different. Apply Exercise 2 to it if you want, so you will have to redraw the character with a completely different point of view.

You have what it takes, it's a matter of shaving off he excess without losing too much. Good luck.

Best advice i can give as to backgrounds is. Do a general composition, it can be messy as you like. Then literally just go grab photos of rocks, trees, ground, clouds, etc. Arrange these in roughly the places you want them erasing whatever u need to and adjusting their values and colors with sliders to match your theme. Then lower the opacity of the whole mess and redraw the background over this using the barely visible photos as a guide. You don't want to copy the photos exactly just let them help you figure out placement and composition. You'll still have to learn how to draw things like rocks and trees, etc...but it can take alot of the pain out of having to pull everything out of thin air. I learned to do this the hard way. I've spent weeks working on backgrounds only to end in frustration. This technique speeds up the process considerably.
