I was a beginner that thought basically the same thing but after drawing for a while, what I realized was that the information isn’t really gatekept, I just didn’t draw enough to understand what was good information and what was bad.
Sure there might be artists out there that gatekeep information but that is true for any skill.
There are audio engineers that cover up their setup with a cloth because they don’t want other people copying their settings.

Every talented/skilled artist gatekeeps their path to success. And the VERY FEW skilled artists that want to teach you are usually pretty fucking bad at teaching. The last thing talented/skilled artists want is more artists are their level. It's sad but it's the truth. If you want to "make it" you sadly are going to have to spend 100s of hours reading dry artbooks and watching repetitive video lectures where artists chatter. But you can't just read the pages and do the exercises and zone out. You can't just listen to the video lectures on autopilot and zone out.

You will have to carefully, closely pay attention to the crumbs of wisdom when the skilled artists reveal them on accident, it will be up to you to catch them and interpret what's really being written, what's really being said, when you get insight into how their process actually works. You will need to take notes and mark pages and timestamps for future reference. Artbooks and video lectures are deceptively dense. You think you're reading a paragraph where Loomis describes his construction process or you think you're listening to Vilppu blabber about form, but there's actually a lot packed in, these artists just arent wordsmiths and cant convey their years of experience in an easily digestable format

Like most things in life that are worthwhile, it's not easy. And even the people who could make it easier for you, won't.

I think the reality is somewhere between the two. Skilled artists are good at art but not much else. They suck at explaining things, as most people do. Teaching is a very difficult task. And teaching in an easily understandable, digestible format is even harder. There is also the issue of, once you reach a certain skill level in something, it is almost impossible to remember what life was like when you were struggling with the basics.

I think when you go from beginner to intermediate to expert, your brain makes a bunch of incremental scaffolding along the way, lots of little "oh! now I get it!" moments that help elevate you one notch up at a time. but you forget those little "aha" moments once you gain mastery. I think unless you take very detailed notes of your own learning process, it will be almost impossible for 99.99% of people to meaningfully teach people far below you in skill level. Our brain only keeps a short term memory for this kind of thing, imo

In his usual videos, he glosses over his drawing process and it is more like a speedpaint. Here, however he is taking more time to explain what he is thinking while he is drawing, and how he prepares before he begins to draw.

He blatantly tells you to use reference, and there are several times where he tells you to analyze, look at your reference, and try to understand the features of it to create your own portrait. There's no deep underlying secret, especially for drawing a portrait. Additionally this stuff is digestible for his audience which is relatively young and probably just starting out in art.

Unironically just draw and study faces more anons. stop complaining that professionals don't explain every single small step of fundies that they already have a good grasp on and is effortless for them. There's no deep secret with art. Stop making excuses and draw.

That's why practicing is just the best method at getting good at something as complex as art, there are a lot of things you cant explain together, but their are things you can practice that will improve your art alot. which is why people always recommend to beginner to literally just draw some boxes and lines, because those two things are just so simple that if you cant get right the drawing will suffer.

Same with painting, 90% of painting is just shapes and values, you only need those two things too make a painting read. hell you can even paint without value but you need a light and dark relationship in your painting to get any sense of realism in your painting.

Since, again, you lack the ability to read between the lines anywhere here let me actually spell it out for you; Yes. I do, in fact, utilize simplified mathematical processes like basically any-fucking-other person who draws an image using perspective. For instance, when drawing a series of the same boxes all going to the same vanishing point at the same angle and size the length of your lines that show depth will be logarithmic ally shorter until you're not able to draw boxes anymore.

If you want a series of fucking equations and formulas that can explain it in more detail look it up on wikipedia, wolfram alpha, a simple google search, hell just go find a fucking architecture book that explains the concepts.

Therefore, since it isn't realistic to develop an optical theorem every time you want to create an image. Saying "it's just logic" or "it's just math" is stupid, as very few people can actually deduce a reliable way of reproducing an euclidean r3 space on the fly, and so it becomes a matter of memorizing the correct procedure, not producing it logically.

I mean, if you only do busts of anime girls then yeah this is passable but if you're not utilizing the right mathematical procedures you're not gonna be capable of doing anything more ambitious. Which is fine, I get that you're not a good artist to begin with so you wouldn't get the whole "ambition" thing anyway.

Just because I'm not literally calculating numbers doesn't mean I'm not using math. I'm comparing ratios, curves, even making sure I keep track of amounts and shapes and colors I use so I maintain appealing ratios of each. I know this probably seems a bit ridiculous to you since I doubt you've put more effort into an image than a 3/4 view of a head looking left but this really isn't that hard.
