IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make YOURSELF feel proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES - try ~1000px, <1.1mb

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Could someone point me where to put the lights here please?

I have intended the weapon to irradiate a gold light and to reflect on the characters faces.

I was thinking that the scene where the gun and the characters are is under the shadow of a tree, so there is a stronger light coming from the gun.

Much appreciated.

You made the nose and mouth too small and the nose is too high up. This is one of those cases where you really need to line up all the landmarks on the ref and figure out what goes where and how big it is in relation to other things. For example, the corners of his mouth don't line up with his tear ducts like you've drawn.

The head is constructed wrong. Proportions are fine but they are not the only thing that makes a head look like a head. Box in the shapes, try making the drawing not look flat from the start. Step back, study the construction, a little bit of anatomy and try it again. Values shouldn't be just trying to find the right shade, it should be a representation of the relation of a plane to another. Understanding things makes you able to do your own "people", not just copying. Knowing this things speed up copying a lot tho. Watch any portrait artist doing it and you'll see they fully understand how the subject works (Watch Oliver Sin demonstration). You wont need to measure things as constantly as you imagine. It's a habit. Practice making relations between sizes and distances in the things around you as if you would draw them. The contour is the only thing you need to draw out of thin air, the rest of the marks can be related to it after that. The reason people that do hyper realism use grids is the amount of detail that has to be perfectly placed. Personaly I dont see the difference between doing this and taking a photo. If two artist draw the same thing and it looks exactly the same, there's no personality, no emotion, no art essentialy. Just my opinion tho, a lot of people might disagree. From personal experience charcoal is the best media for portraits, never tried pastels. Helps a lot when understanding values too, gets really dark really fast and is easily erasable. And cheap. Won't be the best for hyperrealism for obvious reasons. Oh, corners. Corners are really fucking important. Things like the meeting of the planes in the forehead, cheekbones, bridge of the nose, etc. When you get to more complex positions with tilting and perspectives you'll find out they are often times more important than the actual lines. Find study material such as videos and books. Don't be too hard on yourself in the /beg/gining, You can make it, just put in the work. This is basically a bunch of things i wish i could have told myself from the past and that's probably why it'll sound like im projecting a lot.

Ok, you make a convincing argument so I'll shelve this attempt and tomorrow I'll try it the hard way.
My problem now is just I can't draw from imagination, so I can only copy what I see. But if I'm copying something, then why settle for flaws when there's an absolute objective metric of what my drawing is supposed to look like right there in front of me? I'm not trying to infuse any personality or emotion into the drawing, I'm just trying to force my dumbass uncooperative arm to draw the exact thing that I want it to. Either way, I can acknowledge that making guidelines like that is doing it on easy mode.

So, digital painting. I'm going through a course from ctrl+paint and the guy is using the soft round brush. I've also heard from other people that you should start out with the hard round and avoid soft brushes until getting decent with the hard one. Can someone explain to a digitalet when to use one over the other because I swear I keep getting conflicting information?

I did this exercise, following the videos, but using the hard brush, with the soft eraser occasionally when blending. Just want to know if I'm on the right track here, trying to not pick up bad habits.

Hi /beg/ so first of all i am completely aware of most of the proportion issues i got on this wip and specially the god awful pose i drew for this lucario, im kind of ready to patch things up but i've noticed i have an issue whenever i do fan art of things

Im always at a constant debate about how on model i wanna go, like i always take official art as reference but then i look at art made by other people and i go, "that's interesting i'll try this" or " actually this proportions look cuter, so i start changing stuff and i end up with a weird mix which later motivates me to go back to my mentality of "i must stay on model"

is like if other people go off model when making fanart of a character i kinda like it, but if i go of model i like it for 2 minutes and then i push myself back to go on model , this creates a lot of issues later on like the hands here for example they felt way cooler a few days ago now i see they are real bad i think i started changing them once i saw the proportions of manga korrina

set it to 1 minute, you must draw the pose of whatever is in the picture before the time runs out, do this 100 times and then set it to 30 seconds and 100 more, at the very least you will learn to use a line of action to draw stuff over it even if you don't really understand the anatomy in depth you will start drawing bodies

Don't stress too much about it. What i can see is that you have poor edge control but that comes naturally. The only reason I can polish mine to this degree is because ive studied the fundamentals of lighting once I knew how to tackle perspective and form. Matt will only teach you how to place the paint, and will barely explain why its forms look like that in the first place. Try reading perspective made easy by Ernest Norling or take Eric Olson's course on perspective. (its 69gb good fucking luck). after that try scott robertsons how to draw, but that one is pretty advanced, you cant go in without atleast knowing what a cone of vision is.

The point of all this is for you to learn how to draw form, because If you can't draw it, you can't shade it.

Once you learn how to draw basic forms properly, only then can you light them and plot their cast shadows. Scott robertson's how to render explains it pretty well, but you wont be able to get past the first few chapters without the knowledge from the previous book, that bastard is vague as fuck.

First time here, Im drawing for 5 years now, but i feel like beg when drawing from photo or even worse from life. I skipped almost all fundies except dynamic bible, my ink on paper lines smooth and confident, but subject matter is just, you know. I need loomis and all that stuff, im deep in my comfort zone of same characters, i always impress normies when starting drawing character from "imagination" without guidlines and structure, although anatomy bad, it looks confident.

Now im starting at the beggining because i hit the wall for a long time. Im reading "keys to drawing" and it says "spend half time or more on subject instead of looking on paper all the time" but it looks like shit, i draw fucking boots from the beggining in 5 minutes looking on paper all the time and just occasionally glancing at them and it looks ten times better when im spend 20 minutes "analysing" remembering each shape and line and putting on paper.

Should i just continue struggling or i can just forget about "look, remember, draw" and do it my way? I cant pmw right now, sorry

You can 100% do Loomis with digital. The issue is that you've been using a pencil your whole life whereas you need to relearn how to draw with digital. If you're not sure you even like drawing just practice traditionally with a pencil and a bunch of printer paper. If you find that it's something you want to pursue then start working on getting into digital.

beg but
The only time I might use the soft brush is for soft edges in shadow shapes, but a lot of times I'll do that with the hard brush as well just because I'm more comfortable with it.
I think people say begs should avoid the soft brush because it might trick them into thinking their rendering is smooth when in reality it's just a hazy mess.
Just pay attention to the edges of your reference, if they're very soft it's okay to go with the soft brush, otherwise try with a hard brush first.

>>4711757
It's not bad, but it's got some measurement issues, like the eye looks too big, forehead small, mouth a little smaller. If you correct these things the likeness will increace. Also, it kind of look half inbetween a more graphic style and a rendered one. I mean, I see you put some tones here and there but left the face mostly intact, which means it's the lightest value, and that's not the case on the ref, I only see very few spots of pure white, on the nose and the mouth. Then you put some value on the cheek which yes, it's there but in this case it doesn't help to read the form, so I would be more subtle with that. Anyways, you're doing good, I would just start working on rendering since your proportions are pretty good.

Everything was mostly in the midtone range so it made it easy to start adding lighter values in places like the cheek and forehead in order to make them pop. I also tried to indicate a stronger light source by making the nose cast a shadow, making the shadowed side of his face darker and by reducing the amount of contrast around there. I also tried to make the eyes pop a bit more by rounding out the form of the eyeball (added a cast shadow on the eye) and I tried integrating the beard and the skin a bit more by blending the transition between them. But yeah, you've got a good base of midtones set up so all you really have to do is build on top of it, slowly add some lighter values, blend them in, add some more, etc. The same goes for dark values. Hope it's somewhat helpful.

there are no shapes, just patches of shadow mud. It doesn't make it look 3d, the only part that might be 3d is behind the nose

The biggest problem here is the shapes you used for arms and legs. Follow the curves of the limbs more, so the thigh and the calf/forearm and bicep are distinct and convey any movement/twisting/foreshortening correctly. Bottom left is one of the better ones here, as you've done that with the leg and somewhat with the arms.

arms are too long i think. the upper arm should end with the rib cabe. And the wrist should reach the crotch.

Well it depends. For me it works because I'm a big fan of bridgman's style, so it makes me wanna draw more. The thing with a book like this is that is specifically made to help you draw hands, so most of the drawings in it have a certain gesture and structure to make it easier to understand and get a feel for it. Google images is great, or hell, eve taking your own pictures, but I think is more difficult to learn by yourself how to comunicate gesture/form just by trial and error only using refs. In Bridgman's book he already made the artistic choices to make the drawings look appealing, so if you actually study him (instead of just copying), you eventually end up picking up these subtle things he shows and you then incorporate in your drawings. I feel I'm improving, I also draw hands from ref and try my best at imagination, everything is cool, you just gotta find what works for you.

TL;DR: It's better for me, your experience might differ
