>Day 2
I was wondering if I should focus on specific body parts alongside figure drawing.
I've thought of having myself study 7 different parts of the body throughout the course of this month so that every 4 days, I focus on a new part.
>Gesture
>Lower Torso
>Legs/Feet
>Upper Torso
>Arms/Hands
>Head/Neck/Shoulders
>Facial Features
I would study different video courses and stuff of each of these for 4 days and then apply it to my figure drawings.
At least I think it makes more sense like this. Studying one topic for a whole month gets exhausting and boring after a while.
But I honestly just want to see how much I can improve if I am more deliberate with my studies.

#4 here turned out pretty decently. that was a tricky one with all the weird foreshortening in the torso, but it reads well in your drawing. I think when you get to the 5 minute pose it might be more beneficial to spend that extra time analyzing the pose and measuring out proportion as opposed to adding tone to the figure, though the cross contour lines do help define the form

Thanks. Gnass mentioned about putting one form behind the other so I tried my best to apply that in this one.
I sometimes rush into a drawing so I guess I need to calm myself before getting in. And I added tone because I literally did not know what else to do at that point, at least that's how new I am to drawing.

yeah, I get that a lot too. although I said that you should take more time, I often run into that problem with my ten or fifteen minute poses. I'll 'finish' my drawing and there'll still be three minutes left in the pose and I won't know where to go from there loooool. if you've started doing those anatomy studies you mentioned earlier, the five minute poses might be a good opportunity to put them into practice

Decided to drop Mellen as he rushes into getting you to draw a skeleton while Reed has yet to introduce me to 3D forms.
As you can see in my poses, I have applied shape as opposed to the simple armatures from the previous chapter.
The next chapter in Reed's book is forms and volume but I think I might hold off on that one more day to allow myself to get comfortable doing these shapes first as I think they still need work.
I'm also going to try to copy from Hampton's Design and Invention book as well and see how that works out.

i don't think so, at least personally
maybe it's good for getting better at being able to copy an image directly but how would you use this for drawing a figure from imagination?
you would have to draw thousands of these to barely even understand how to draw a figure from imagination and even then I don't think it would be as effective as simplifying the figure down to it's basic forms (as Loomis does, I believe)
for getting better at copying, i'd say this may be pretty good otherwise, i don't see much point in it
unless there are other reasons that i am not aware of

>> No.5187619

yeah I listen to what he's doing, but I copy from Kenzo's basic outline on the left and tend to abstract from specific practices rather than copying directly. I do like hearing what an individual artist chooses to do or what the imagine the figure wearing, holding, or doing like at one point he mentions she might have longer socks or something

>Day 6
Tomorrow (technically today) is when I'll start studying anatomy. I'm not expecting much though and so I won't be too hard on myself. I figured I could just make this an intro to anatomy more than anything else.
I've decided to use Mattesi's book even though it is seen as a meme by some people here. There are 22 sub-topics and conveniently there are also 22 days from Febuary 7th to Febuary 28 and so I have decided to use his book for that reasoning. Though I will incorporate others that I can find as well.
Valerie's anatomy book is easy to understand as well. I've looked at others and they dont seem like they would help a beginner like me.
On top of that, I have also decided to go to the next chapter of Reed's gesture book; not because I'm ready but because I'm getting a bit tired of using the same technique. I think it's more appropriate to move onto a subject you aren't ready for than to force yourself to master the previous prerequisite as you are bound to return to the basics anyway.
Along with that, I'm still using Hampton to do copies from.

>>5187197
I heard it helps you improve quicker. I'm not sure if it's true but it's not the real reason. Grabbing a ballpoint pen and getting into drawing is more convenient than having to deal with pencils.

>Day 7
I am ashamed of myself.
生きている値しないと思いますね...
I have allowed my circumstances to determine whether I spent the day drawing or worrying.
I have spent half the day worrying and the other half looking for job.
It seems my hikineet life is coming to an end.
Tthough, to be honest, it's about damn time. Not to mention that it doesn't make much of a difference.
I have less time screw around now.
I found that when you have stuff like a job or school, the desire to draw becomes more intense than if you were to stay a hikineet.
But in reality, I'm poor and so it would be nice to get me a nice iPad Pro and transition to fully digital.
So it's not really that big of a deal.
Hopefully I can get one though.
Anyway, this doesn't really change much since I really only drew for 3-4 hours anyway. The rest of the time was spent reading about drawing and doing other stuff.
I just have to be more conscious with how I use my time.

Drawing related, I quite like how the 5 minute one turned out and my idea of drawing with black on top of my blue seemed to work pretty well if I do say so myself. Anyway, I'm blabbing on.

Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.

>Day 9
Skipped day 8 for various reasons and didn't draw much but today I finally finished Chapter 4 of Reed's book which went over 'box-people' which is what I was trying to do with some of these figures.
Ever since I started Reed's book, it felt like it was easier and easier to approach a figure when before it was frightening to put down my first mark.
The Line, Shape, Form method works for me and I think it is what I needed to be able to get out of the absolute beginner slump of figure drawing and be able to approach a drawing with confidence.
Sounds like a shameless plug but i haven't found a book that matched its usefulness and practicality yet after looking through almost 300 books.

>Day 11
Nothing much except I drew more today than yesterday which is a big accomplishment for me as it's hard to sit down sometimes and draw but once you're doing it it's not so bad.
I realized that I might be more satisfied with my work now than before because I spend more time drawing than watching tutorials.
That kind of screwed me up last time and made me think I wasn't improving at all because the little improvement I did make was unpercievable as my expectations were higher than what they should have been.
That's why I've decided to use books rather than video courses.
Granted, only one book felt like it was useful. With the other ones I had to pick out one or two useful things and then drop the whole book.
But I'm satisfied with my progress so far and that's all that really counts.

I did.
I haven't been drawing for a few days as I procrastinate on what video courses and books I need to go through instead of actually drawing.
Feels bad man.
I got frustrated on Day 13 or something and just said, "fuck it," as my drawings were worst than when I started.
Felt like I was getting even worst rather than improving which is why i went on a course and book hoarding spree and haven't drawn since.
I did draw this yesterday but that's about it.

it's normal for some figure drawing sessions to be worse than others, don't worry about it too much! when you apply new techniques, it's normal for the quality to take a dip while you get used to them. make sure you're drawing the stuff in the books and not just hoarding them too.

Been trying to catch up today.
The hardest part is really just making drawing fun and being able to look forward to it.
Kind of like this post >>5206993
But I have to follow my previous habit that worked for me before which was to force myself to draw for X amount of minutes a day and then bump it up as I want.
Just seems harder than usual, I don't know why.
Maybe the no expected end reasoning. If it seems endless, I will lose desire as there is no point.
Ah. Whatever.

>>5212567
I hope so.

>>5212661
Seems like I got worst, objectively, though. Just by looking at the scratchy mess.
But I'll stick to it and see what happens.

>>5212773
>>5212782
Yea, no.
Michael Hampton was the first thing I studied when I first tried drawing and all the concepts were completely lost on me.
Learning Anatomy was the main mentality back in 2019 along with drawing for 12-16 hours a day so I kind of did both.
Not the best decision I made.

Like the anon said, Anatomy is really the last thing you learn. If you can't draw a figure well without anatomy, you won't be able to draw it with with anatomy. Anatomy only makes your figures look better than before it doesn't make your crappy figures look professional. At least that's what I've learned.

your reply was good, but desu I think he should just do bargue / accuracy training and wait to develop perspective later. Accuracy and observational skill is the foundation for everything, even perspective. And it might just be more fun for him, since he can draw whatever subjects he wants. He could draw anime faces even, as long as he's focusing on applying the principles of observation from Dorian Iten

thanks, I started doing figure drawings back in 2012 or so, so maybe eight or nine years. for tips, I'm not really sure... in class, we were told to always draw the full figure even if it's a one minute or 30 second pose, and I think that's a good principle to work from

>> No.5214910

>Day 16
Nothing special as far as art gains.
I did create a rule for myself saying that I must draw before coming on the Chan.
That way, I can't procrastinate since in order to be able to procrastinate using 4chan, I have to first draw.
So I either dont come on here or I draw. This site is some form of addictive drug so I kind of have to give in and draw.
When you stop drawing for even a day it's very difficult to try and pick it back up so it has not been very easy.

>>5213327
>Perspective
Right.
But I am going to go through with BE in The Art and Science of Drawing first to start over from the beginning.
My basic skills are quite lacking.
For observation, I'd avoid Bargue and just do still life studies as it accomplishes the same results and I could choose objects that interest me rather than random renaissance art.
I did copy from Anime before but I'd rather avoid it if I can.
I actually got pretty good at copying but I had zero understanding of form or perspective so all I was really doing was copying lines.
Once I've finished TASOD, then I'll probably move onto perspective and I'll keep your curriculum in mind when I do and try it out.
Thanks.

And today I started to realize that the only reason I was complete shit at figure drawing was because it requires the ability to do many different skills subconsciously at once and I was trying to do juggle all these skills consciously at once which isn't possible and results in the mess that are my figures.

That's why I decided to take some time and learn the fundamentals more deeply.
Study form, perspective, and everything surrounding these topics before moving onto value and shading.
I could create a whole lesson plan but in reality, it'll create itself as I try to study the fundamentals and as I get better at drawing by just drawing a lot.

But I realized after all of this that figure drawing is definitely not for beginners.

>that figure drawing is definitely not for beginners.
It’s not, BUT sink or swim. It’s good to put yourself through the challenge. I do figure drawing every couple months to calibrate my progress. It’s a really good control experiment. I always learn a lot and afterwards my figures get a nice boost.

It’s over at the end of feb, but you can do it any time. Just start now.

I just checked the website and turns out the pose videos on vimeo were timed for only the month of February. Did anyone save the videos from Vimeo or do I have to stick with paying to be a member?
