If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Pretty much. A lot of artists use intuition that they've built up from years of experience in order to purposefully draw certain part of a figure wrong in order to achieve the desired affect. If you place a 3d model in the same position in space, you'll notice that it's going to look different. If you want to get good at extreme foreshortening I sujest first getting good at drawing the figure as a 3d object and then study art or photos which have the foreshortening you want. There's an image pack called Extreme angle I recommend.nmvrwg

Yeah, you could user a wider range of darks. You got some nice dark highlights on the beast thing to the right, as well as the hair, hand, and belt of the main demon dude, but it's not enough to make it interesting. It's fine to keep the background with a low value range so it's not too distracting, but in that case you need to make the main front characters have bigger contrasts so they pop against it.
As for coloring, you could start by adding a new layer with some basic colors and a blending mode, and see where that takes you. Look up grayscale to color method.

There's 2 options:
Start with pencil and paper, since you are already familiar with it from your childhood, so you don't need to learn a tool at the same time you try to learn art. If you later decide to swap to digital though, you'll need to learn the tools and software and go through an adaptation period.
Or, you can start directly digital, which will be harder for a few months as you try to learn and get used to several things at the same time, but if you do get through that process then that's it.

Sorry but this is nonsense, anyone coming to drawing from photography/photo editing can tell you about how easily you can improve composition and color choice just by looking at stuff and seeing what pops.
Like you can just stick a gradient overlay on a photo in PS and hit randomize colors until you get one that looks good and you'll find your confidence in your own color choices develops as you do this.

Your line quality is really nice. Although it's a bit overworked on the eyes and nose.
Subtle angles are really hard, you brain wants to force it into a front facing view. It can help to consciously remember this and force yourself to see it correctly. You can also double check in a mirror or by taking a photo with your phone and flipping it. Seeing at a different angle makes the mistakes stand out. For the likeness, get the shape of the head is really important, yours is pretty good. Getting the correct distances between facial features is crucial. Although overall I can still tell it's meant to be Gosling.
This guide for likeness is pretty good.

I would recommend trying to get them right first, then double checking by tracing. Compare the differences and see what is off. For example, you might make the legs too long, so you can keep that in mind on your next attempt.

From your drawing, I can tell you seem to at least be putting in the effort and time despite lack of skill, so I'd suggest you pick a book or course and work through it, carefully doing every exercise it tells you to do. Vilppu's book and course (do both at the same time) would help you the most at this stage, but if you want to improve your accuracy you could start with Keys to Drawing. Steve Huston's Figure Drawing for Artists is also a good intro point. If you feel like doing Keys to Drawing might take too long (it really doesn't, it's like a month-ish of an hour a day), then you could look up Dorian Iten's Accuracy guide, it's a single video you can draw along with that will teach you some of the measuring techniques you need to copy more accurately.

In short, you need to work on 2 skills: your observation/copy accuracy, and your gesture/dynamism.
For the former do Keys to Drawing by Bert Dodson, or Dorian Iten's Accuracy guide.
For the latter, Vilppu's Drawing Manual (books + videos), or Steve Huston's Figure Drawing for Artists. Pick one of each, can work through them in parallel so you can use the techniques you learn in each other's exercises as well as your own art.

Hey /beg/, how do I stop quitting?

Just cleaned my Intuos 4 with rubbing alcohol after not using it for 9 months.
I had a strong start in 2022. Started with Krenz, felt really good. Moved on to figure drawing. Even did the 100 boxes meme. I've kept drawing something every day for 3 months.

And then.. all of a sudden... like it was all in vain, I quit.
First I just let the tablet sit right there in front of me. "I'll get back into it...", "Just you wait /beg/ igmi!", "Looking forward to showing off my monthly improvements on new years" I kept saying to myself. 2 months later I finally moved it aside... the dust kept piling... and here we are.

What if you can't? I've been getting to that picasso exercise and the six videos after and, my brain just refuses to focus. It wants to see something else on youtube, or it's frustrated at all the terms it doesn't understand, or we're just getting depressed that this as far as I get everytime.

I've been sitting here for three hours, and I'm sure that the big easy answer is just draw, but you guys said I saw it somewhere, that just drawing without the basics is a waste of time but, every attempt to digest the basics is failing for me and I don't know how to sit down and get it into my brain. I have ADHD, I take meds for it, but it's not helping. I have this subconscious lock against improving, and I want to improve? I think? Oh that just goes into a whole big mess of 'what I want' and I don't even know what the fuck I want from art and just asking that feels like ground you've covered and

you get why I've been thinking and cycling my brain on this for a while, just nothing's getting done, and it's frustrating me and that frustration means nothing's getting done and it just loops and loops until it's been three hours and I'm feeling like hurting myself, like the only resolution is to feel pain to resolve this building shame and self-loathing

Greetings BEG! Finished the book. It is basically direct upgrade of the Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Instead of babbling about brain and failing usa school system it contains very detailed idiot-proof step-by-step guides for each exercise it gives you. I didnt really learn much new stuff from it but eh, it wasnt waste of time: i drew. Still its power and scope is nowhere near Keys to drawing which i still consider as king of BEG books.

Can someone explain this to me?
How come you can't just draw stuff and over time get better? I'm a writer, I've written all my life. I never had to study novels or other authors to get better, I just learned how to do it through osmosis and, more importantly, simply doing it. How come learning how to draw isn't that way? I don't even know how to tackle learning how to draw because everything I've ever learned how to do has just been to do it and get better, but for drawing, you have to read books and watch videos and have the right equipment and so on and so on. Is it possible to just draw shit all the time and inevitably get better? From my understanding, if you do that, you're just going to end up like Chris Chan or Linkara where you just keep drawing the same garbage with the same mistakes over and over.
Of course, I don't expect to be able to draw perfect anatomy without studying, but I mean, it feels like you can't even do decent work without having to rigorously train and study... It's all very confusing.

I... know? That's why I didn't say that, I said 'can't say they made me feel better' because he started talking about diet and habits affecting emotion, (marijuana lowers REM sleep, diet can affect motivation) and that has me rolling back my years thinking how long some of these problems have been in play, which is making me think more about past mistakes and bringing my mood down more...

It's like a gordian knot of depression, all attempts to untangle are just dragging me down more, or my mind just wants to find the worst way to take it. I get that that's exhausting to hear for someone trying to help me, and I don't want you to think it wasn't worth it, but I felt like explaining. I don't know if I needed to explain, but I wanted to, and it's been a few hours since I've been doing something I wanted to do.

I guess asking art questions >>6485825 I googled that and got https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLqWX7onVmU I think that's what he wanted to link but
>don't draw cartoons because you'll pick up other people's styles from it
Is that really a problem if all I was ever trying to do with learning art was to get good enough to replicate an established one? All of this self-hate is over drawing pictures for a fanfiction that look as good or closer to the style of a show I'm working on (no one's just going to read a words-only adaptation of a visual medium). I figure, yes, I should learn the fundamentals and such to get better overall, but... in this case, isn't just drawing the references of the cartoon style I'm trying to emulate fine? Or at least, fine enough to be okay for 'just draw'ing?

They're the same, it's just that formal English education is a lot better than formal art education.

Thank you, this actually really helped me. English is a core subject, so of course you learn a lot more. The last time I "studied" a novel was in high school and through that and a general growing interest in storytelling, I've learned how to analyze a story and now I just passively do it as I read. Like you said, art education is very bad, at least in American public schools; like for one unit we're painting, then the next we're drawing perspective, then the next we're making pottery. I never actually realized how much of a head start school gave me when it came to writing, which is why my writing is much better than my drawing. I need to effectively supplement the years wasted in art class with actual art education through books.
I've spent so long looking at drawing as this enigmatic and incomprehensible beast when it's really just because I wasn't given a proper foundation and understanding of it. Well, I'm off to doodle in a notebook now. Thank you

I can personally vouch on
>keys to drawing
>drawing for the absolute and utter begginer, revised
Both these books should be very resistant to your ADHD as long as you split the book into enough pieces so you dont get overwhelmed. Just two pages per day. If book has 200 pages and you crawl 2 pages per day, you will finish it before summer starts.

If you have mega strong ADHD then print the book and physically take 2 pages out of it at a time so your brain cannot slobber over whole book nonstop flipping back and forth. And just copy the drawings and do the exercises.

if you cannot do even the 1 or 2 pages at a time then i am sorry, you will be forever NGMI and probably end up dying as hobo on street since you will never finish even applying for social welfare. I wish you good luck. You will probably need it.

>>6485980
i have seen too many badly written fanfics online to know you dont learn good storytelling just "by writing a lot". You need a good feedback or good references. Or you will end up just like with the drawing: writing the same shit, using the same limited vocabulary and using the same broken grammar and ineffective tropes.

>> No.6486031
