Low hanging fruit but when someone adds buttons with pride flags on their character. Aside from the obvious faggy side of it it never looks visually appealing and immediately makes a character uninteresting to me.

Generic looking designs, especially with hair or clothing. There are many reasons why someone might choose it deliberately, but especially in anime, I just get sick of the designs that frequently look same. Specific example for me would be Denji from Chainsaw man, his actual chainsaw form is kino design, but his normal design is just a step above basic which is still too basic for my taste. But it was probably a deliberate choice.
I just really like stylishness or unique design, doesn't even need to be that crazy.

Not exactly a pet peeve, but more of an autistic nitpick I keep to myself
I really hate it when a character that lives a relatively normal life (normal for their universe at least) wears a really complicated and intricate outfit as their standard garb. Like, imagining that character making the conscious choice to put all that shit on in the morning, it doesnt make sense to me. Mind you an impractical outfit doesn't make a design inherently bad, but it's just something that irks me.
Alternatively, when an otherworldly character that is seemingly beyond human beauty rituals has accessories like ear rings and nail polish.
I guess that's a long winded way of saying I don't like character designs that aren't consistent with the actual character's personality/background

It's a character design shortcut. Some kid wants a gay character, or maybe just a character, and now it's associated with a tacky symbol which is easy to shrink.

Flop. Also I don't think most gays would be caught dead with a tacky pin other than at such an event, but even then it still says nothing about the personality of the character.

It's like a microcosm of those teens who need something to stand in for having a personality so they use their orientation because it's all they have. But it really doesn't say much. (Although maybe it then circles back around to saying something significant about a character, if they have no personality traits besides that they wear a pin about themselves.) (But I doubt it's usually thought about that deeply by the designer.)

Also I think a lot of times the indication of someone's orientation is unnecessary. If it's a romance it's unnecessary because it would be obvious from who's dating who. If it's not romance then orientation issues may not even be in the story.

tl;dr: It's simply a design trap for people who want to pack info into a design despite the info being probably irrelevant + looks tacky. But it's quite understandable that lots of young designers would take such a shortcut to their character's detriment

Like no offense to whoever did this, I think it looks fine otherwise. But it seems like if you step back, a pasted symbol would not be a good start to describe your unique character. It feels cost effective per space, yet it's actually just a cost.

It may be due to people trying to design a character first and wanting the character to represent himself alone, but don't think about what the story (if there is even an attached comic) will show about the character.

So this could be an aspect to think ahead about, if you are struggling to design a character for a comic. Perhaps think ahead about what else will happen in the comic to this character and maybe add/subtract things from your character's design based on that.

If you must have a flag pin / colors on your character, it should probably have a real story purpose. For example, if your character has a pin maybe they are more the activist type and maybe they are actually trying to effect something. Or maybe it turns out that they are more compensating for flaws. It could also be the subject of scrutiny, possible because they are wearing the pin in the first place.

You can like a character design, but not the character attached to it or in some cases expand upon a simple design with your own spin. Even then accurate characterization in canon isn't always accurate. One day Superman can be your everyman, the next he's some genocidal despot. One day Spongebob could be a naive eccentric, the next he's a bumbling buffoon. But yeah fan renditions 9 times out of 10 are terrible.

It's a girl that mostly pursues male interests and hobbys, has a rather combative or competitive personality, while still retaining her femininity.
Basically, the perfect woman.

I'm just saying that most artists draw tomboys with short hair because it's easier to showcase their masculine traits in their design that way because most people regard short hair on women as masculine or rather less feminine.
I am strictly talking about an easily readable character design here.
If you design a tomboy with a feminine hairstyle, you should show their masculine traits in other physical ways like their body language, body type, and clothing they're wearing.
Visual design should always be the first step to show the audience who your character is.
If your character only acts but doesn't look like a tomboy, you'll just confuse the audience.
A duck needs to look and sound like a duck to be a duck.

It could be considered that.
Well, you could see it as a design choice as well.
Horns like that don't offer a strong contrast and make it come off as a natural part of the design while implying that the character would be an oni, even though the girl would just be some other regular anime girl without the horns.
As a whole it is done for color consistency and stylization as well.
With the lack of real strong features such as scales or a fierce appearance, the horns come off as pure and beautiful, which is the goal of this design as well. That has to do with jap beauty standards etcetera and it's much more nuanced than this post.

Toei was trying to appeal to the yaoi fanbase, they wanted to make the show "diverse", or they wanted to "expand the market".
The mangaka didn't take it good, and the show was wrapped up shortly after, leaving a chunk of the manga without being animated.
They did a similar thing with Saint Seiya and the gay as fuck scene betwee two of the MCs, they wanted to appeal to the yaoi fangirls.
Basically, shit marketing people, boys already watched Sailor Moon because the hot waifus and girls watched Saint Seiya because the hot husbandos.

I don't think that is the reason they made Seiya a man in civilian form. Sailor Moon's popularity took a nosedive after SuperS so they probably thought that a "love triangle" with an idol would help them getting back the little girls that were growing out of Sailor moon. It did not work at all, the Starlights/Three Lights proved to be very unpopular(the episode with the most romantic moments between Seiya and Usagi was the less watched episode in the franchise's history) with the audience and they close the series earlier than planned
