Maybe you read too much shounen? Perhaps you are more accustomed to stories where underdog protagonists (that constantly encounter enemies much stronger than they are) who need to train after getting thrashed or utilize the power of friendship to overcome their ordeals. Imagine my story more in the vein of Nanatsu no Taizai. The protagonists make the villains shit themselves instead of being constantly shat on and then having DBZ or Bleach training sessions to unlock new powers to overcome their foes. It's a journey, and adventure and an escort mission after all.
