Small taps is all you need. Might want to look into getting a Suzo/LS-32-01 Seimitsu instead of a JLF though as the dead zone is much smaller so more responsive.

I use a JLF as I primarily play fighters though.

Also playing DDP with the blue ship is another option - DonPachi or DoDonPachi. Don't try DFK, that's brutal.

My personal favorite hori shmup is the Cotton series.

For something a bit different look up Kingdom Grand Prix, Twinkle Star Sprites and Psyvariar.
