I find SA hard because the system doesn't award you extra lives for points anymore. Being the risk-taker I am, I used to balance my mistakes with those extra lives I got from my mindless grazing and my rushed attempts to get to the auto-collection boundary.
Also, no more free lifes. Now you get to defeat 5 bosses' attacks without bombing to get one of those. That means more lives in the start of the game, taking it easy in the middle, dying a lot and then suddenly realizing you won't have enough lives to 1cc the game because it's much harder not to bomb in most of the last bosses.
