Partly, it's because of the 'Hata-tan' character made by some artist. You can probably find it on danbooru.

However her broad association is thanks to a few lines from her omake in Double Spoiler:
"Hatate is a reporter that never goes outside for her newspaper research.
She takes pictures using thoughtography and uses them for her articles.

Hatate's thoughtography works by inputting keywords for her camera, which she uses to find associated photos.

She doesn't feel the need to go outside because this is convenient."
While that last part is obviously referring to the way she gets her photographs, it can be easily taken as her never leaving her house, and being some sort of crazy tengu hikki.
