And a fair bit of stuff was changed as Higurashi went, some big things were obviously planned but Ryukishi has pointed out things he changed after certain chapters came out.
Like Himatsubushi coming into existence after Higurashi gained popularity, Shion didn't exist during Onikakushi, Irie at some point being the big bad, or Satoshi having a "cool" dry personality before his actual nice big brother role.
