So you're telling me that to a player with no knowledge of the safespot(which is, to the player, equivalent to it not existing), the first thing to come to mind when seeing the left half of pic related is not to swerve up and down through the stars but to stay at a specific height and move left and right? And similarly when first confronted with the right half of pic related, that the "natural" response is for some reason to wedge yourself into the overlap? You have to be joking. Show any non-Touhou playing friends of yours this spell and ask what they think the strategy should be. I'm willing to bet that more often than not you'll get "swerve through the big red things while avoiding the small ones" rather than "stay in the middle and shift left and right". It's obviously through experimentation, accident, or having seen it done by someone else that a player would discover the safespot, which makes it no different than (ab)using any other safespot in the game.
