What's the big deal about idols?

If you just like the music, alright, that's completely fine. Would you, however, still like the music if it was sung by an ugly girl rather than a cute one?

They basically make their living by milking lonely men. What I don't understand is why these people continue to worship them. Do they think that if they spend enough money, they'll one day get to go out with the idols? This really seems to be it seeing just how mad people sometimes get when an idol announces she's dating someone. It's not like any of the fans would ever even have made a move on the girl anyway, so what's the problem?
