The USA was one of the first countries to adopt Metric as the standard in the 1870s. They kept imperial standard measurements around because they were considerate of other countries still on imperial or their own units for which they were accustomed to converting. The US waited for other countries to catch up, but the US became so huge that imperial became impossible to get rid of, so both are taught.

Imperial has become a mainstay for a few everyday things like weather, cooking temps, driving speed, vague measurements (it is common for Americans to use inches and feet for eyeballing the size of small objects, but will alternate between yards/meters when gauging such ranges), and tools having both imperial and metric units listed, but the US otherwise always uses metric for any profession requiring precision.
