They're quite popular among most Japanese people. Not everyone in Japan is otaku and a majority of AKB fans are not wotas. They are seen as a minority and most Japanese people think very low of them. That's why they get made fun of on TV.

FYI I'm not trying to distance myself from wotas cause I'm sure I'm something of a part-time wota myself but you don't have to be a wota to enjoy AKB or other idol groups.
