It's a weird thing you're arguing. If what you say is true then there shouldn't be anyone living in a foreign country who can't speak that country's language, and yet such people do exist in abundance. And this is even the case when it comes to people who speak one Indo-European language and move to another country where another Indo-European language is spoken. The real world evidence is against you.

Somebody saying a bunch of incomprehensible shit when standing in your general vicinity isn't going to teach you anything:

Nuke's vocabulary is too bad for this osmosis approach you seem to be suggesting to work. See his performance in the quiz.

it's gonna take me a minimum of 2 more years to get to 98% comprehension? sigh.

65% was a worst case scenario estimate just to illustrate the point I was trying to make about poor retention on high numbers of new cards still resulting in a substantial increase in memorized cards compared to good retention with the standard 20 cards a day.

>>21421806 claimed to have 82% retention with 50 a day, which would give you just shy of 15k memorized cards/year (putting you around the 96% comprehension mark in pic related), with only 140-180 reviews to do per day.

Btw 95% is only about 10k words, you can do that in a year.

This is a Japanese language learning thread for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.

If you have no interest in the above or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

well the vocab is the hard part, that's what 90% of language learning is.. but at 2200 words you are comprehending 90%, aprox. and then just yomichan the rest. I'm at about 3k words and can read most stuff witout yomichan they write. There's always the show offs who write complex shit but thats mixes it up and you don't want it too ez all the time.

You really need about 5500 words to start fealing like you're understanding anything. I'm starting to get moments where where I understand pretty well but most stuff I miss and I'm at about 4500 words. The last % of words is the most important.

The first 1000 words in Core are really common, so learning them greatly cuts down on the frequency with which you will need to look up words while reading.

After that 1k mark though, the words you learn from Core rapidly become less and less common, and thus less and less 'useful'. This is what I mean by "diminishing returns".

Pic related demonstrates the principle. Take a look at the "Books" row. Around 1000 words will take you from 0% coverage to 80% coverage, but to go from 80% coverage to 90% coverage requires around 4000 words by comparison.

This doesn't mean "don't use Anki", it means "don't waste your time on pre-made vocab decks past the 1k-2k mark".

How come the figures for books on pic related are so much lower than those for magazines and newspapers?

Newpapers I can *maybe* understand using more words than books, but magazines? It even suggests that magazines use more words than newspapers. I find it really hard to believe that.
