Usually it's getting interested in one of the characters, learning about her and her faction, figuring out how it fits into the world of Gensokyo, finding a new favorite through a similar process, playing some of the games, playing all of the games, getting good at a couple of them, learning about the cast of several games, reading one of the mangas, reading more of the mangas, and achieving a headcanon Gensokyo that the black Tewi can add to her collection.

At some point you determine what kind of underwear each of the girls has, but that's not important.
