It's kinda weird that they put that detail in without showing Satoko paying attention to it. Because we see the events from Satoko's point of view, so we already get her "wtf rika is a rotten friend" perspective loud and clear.

Then, from that, it's up to the audience to notice (opposite) cues that Satoko doesn't/can't, and understand that both are at fault. So why show (to the audience) that Rika discards her new "friends" just as casually as she discarded Satoko? Well, it does prove that she isn't excluding Satoko... but being a bitch to everyone doesn't make her look any better.

If only they had been assigned to the same dorm room. That might have been enough to stop the tragedy.
