Your friend is both right and wrong. Every word in Japanese has an extremely complex hierarchy of social implications with infinite double meanings that are impossible for a foreigner to grasp. You might as well give up, you won't ever understand Japanese.

Not unless you want to talk like a robot. Manga has the benefit of being able to show what's happening visually and the dialogue is how people would normally speak.

Try listening to an audiobook and imagine that someone was actually explaining something to you in real life. It'd be weird.
