Briefly, RAID is not backup. It protects against one thing and one thing ONLY: hard drive failure. Always follow the 3-2-1 backup rule and keep at least one copy offsite. Synology devices are nice for a 'set it and forget it' solution that just works out of the box, unraid and freenas are better if you want to use your own machine, you have specific requirements (like wanting expandable RAM for example, prebuilt NAS units usually use extremely expensive proprietary RAM and run on a custom proprietary build of Linux) or you want to learn the nitty gritty details along the way.
