Tanuki:

+ Related to dogs
+ Playful
+ Helps you get home if you're overly drunk
+ Family oriented
Kitsune:
- Horrid tricksters
- Always out to get one over on you
- Use their beauty exclusively to rob you
- Will walk out on you and leave you penniless.

Consider for a moment the tanuki survival strategy.
They're a basal canid species with relatively low activity and aggression. Not only do diseases and parasites get to them, but so do many predatory mammals.
In the wild, 60% of tanuki deaths are from other canids. They get mogged on by red foxes and are just a snack to wolves.
Throughout their traditional range in Asia they're considered a food item and are regularly trapped (or farmed) for their soft fur.
So how does an underdog like them survive? Love and tolerance, literally.
They're opportunistic eaters who can stomach nearly anything, and they can survive a wide range of temperatures and biomes.
More than that, they FUCK. An unchecked tanuki infestation can quickly get out of hand because their response to attrition is to make more nooks.
They have litters of 6-16, come into heat every month even while pregnant, and can give birth up to three times a year.
