少女時代's popularity isnt confined to one nation like AKB48's popularity is. 少女時代's popularity extends to all over Asia (including Japan) and to a limited degree in the West.

And unlike AKB48 success in Japan which depends on otaku, 少女時代's primary fanbase in Japan are females.
