What you need to realize and remember is the way the light rays we see as colors interact with each other, adding and subtracting from each other with different intensity. Always remembering a few basic principles of (light color <- basic color -> shade color opposite of the light color; the way differently colored lights reflect; and so on) color theory and studying quality photos and quality paintings would be enough to make your colorings look moderately good in the eyes of an unbiased observer. You can also go the Ruan Jia / nababa route and break the principle in some places based on your own taste for interesting results, but you need proper judgment and lots of experience for this, or it won't work.
