i made a bunch of failed attempts at learning jp in the past because i just didn't have any faith that simply reading shit in japanese would teach me the language

i thought i had to read about grammar to learn, and when i would try reading something "easy" (e.g. yotsuba) only to find it completely incomprehensible, i concluded that i hadn't read enough about grammar yet and needed to back and read more grammar guides and gain a deeper technical understanding of what was going on + why in the sentences

the best advice i could give to my old self would be basically "you can't learn japanese from a textbook, you need to read, and yes 'just reading' does work"

also want to go back to my past self from about ~2 years ago and slap him in the face for a) not using anki, and b) not looking up words manually (as opposed to lazily using popup dictionaries) to compensate for it
the result of these two things being that even though i've been reading regularly for over 2 years now my vocabulary is still beginner-tier and i can't even watch SoL anime without having to pause constantly to look things up

Is there anything more difficult than old movies?

The actors don't even seem to speak in Japanese; they just communicate via random grunting noises.

This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels and Japanese video games. This is NOT your personal translation service (>>>/r/ | >>>/wsr/).
