Fair enough. Uhh, I'd say that Rin-chan must be very brave... she's the only one of the Makaijin that is met in Gensokyo. Perhaps she thought her amazing circle magic would have guaranteed her victory against the dumb Gensokyans. Sadly for her, she was quickly stumped out.
Given that she looks like the generic Makaijin that appear later, the only difference being her magic circle, she must be a normal Makai person with one special magic. Given that she left to Gensokyo, she must be curious and brave, kind of like a fairy.
On the other hand, Ayana must be part of Shinki's guard, since we meet her just before Yumeko. Perhaps she's the captain of the low level guards, just below Yumeko. Her danmaku strikes me as serious, and her variety of attacks is rare for a nameless midboss. Working under Yumeko must be stressful, but perhaps the status of serving Lady Shinki directly is worth it. But it could also be that Yumeko is a Sakuya-type perfect maid that leaves almost no work for the lower grunts.
