You are at least 30% wrong. Yes gesture drawing and consistency are important, but if you always do it from reference you become a rendermonkey. You also need to actually know the concepts behind perspective, real art theory and optical perspective type stuff. Understanding the basics of multi point perspective from the view of a camera is possibly one of the most important things a beginner can do. Anatomy and perspective are also important but coloring and shading are just as important, you shouldn't abandon one for the other. The most important thing to do is challenge yourself, not follow a system.
