Nah, the kitsune thing would go horribly if it went the couple route.
No dumb mamono bullshit, the kitsune's however many hundreds of years old, and is going to outlive the guy many times over. She sees him as as the equivalent of a child, comparitively, even as she understands he's an adult.
By comparison, the guy sees her as a teacher, a divine being, object of worship, force of nature. Everything except an equal.
They live in different worlds, through how they experience time. He lives on a day-by-day basis, she lives on a generation-by-generation basis.

There's this unbridgable gulf between the guy and the kitsune they're both aware of, but even knowing that, they can still enjoy each other's company and perspective.
