My own biggest beef with pure love eroge MCs is that most of the time they're mellow relatively outgoing yasashii nippondanshi that get close to everything done correctly and are surrounded by pseudo-harem of cute girls in their daily life. If the whole point was to self insert you'd think that the majority of people who regularly play pure love games would be able to better identify and empathize with protagonists who start out as losers, kind of like LxC.

Or just have protagonists be fun active characters on their own rather than just a cardboard for the heroine to talk to. Like Fureraba.

Out of moege or regular heroine focused eroge, the first Lovely x Cation's protagonist really rubbed me the right way. Sad that the later games made the protagonist's personality less pronounced. I also liked Fureraba's crude protagonist. Like you said blank slates and in general protagonists with no notable traits apart from being the generic polite and helpful Japanese fellows are the worst.

For plot games it obviously depends on the type of story in general. As for traps, I concur with the post above yours. Traps are better when they enjoy their crossdressing and being plowed in the ass.
