Rifling was very well possible at the time of muskets, just terribly expensive and sometimes even useless as smoke built up in formations and reloading turned messy. I figured that for a gun given to a single person whose job isn't to stand in formation and shoot as quickly as she could, and can also clean it easily with hocus pocus, it'd be more than justified compared to a smoothbore.
