We’re used to think of idolatry as something that distracts us from God, and perversion as something to do with sex. But idolatry also can distract us from the thing itself, and perversion can be many things. A cat is a wonderful thing, but it isn’t an outlet for emotional needs on the level of replacing other human beings. A video game is a great thing, and getting a rare item in one is too, but it’s not something to spend hundreds of hours over, or make it central to your life and even the game itself. You can love something as an ideal so much that it can kill the reality of a thing for you; the moe waifu kills the idea of real women, who do not look like that, are not sweet all the time, don’t depend on you as much as tolerate you at times, and are real things.

This is the real reason why Christians can’t fully engage in 2-D culture, or be otaku on that level. In the end, God created the things we see before us. While imperfect, they are very real reflections of Him, and to shun them for fantasies beyond which is healthy is in a small way shunning him. He made love in the context of being expressed among real humans, and the kind of love we express for ideals is different. Swapping the two is perversion, and to ideally love real humans (like in courtly love) or carnally love imaginary ones (2-D) harms us.

I’d only have one single caveat to add. If a person truly is broken, alone, and isolated, it is possible for God to reach them even through moe. The context of this discussion is in normal people exchanging real for ideal, but some people are so wounded that they need to learn to love an ideal first, and maybe over time they can understand the real. This may be a subject for another post, but otaku culture in general arises out of a profound isolation and sense of existential despair. It was wrong for Dante to idolize Beatrice in real life, but when he was cast into Hell, that idolization was a way to teach him enough selflessness to escape it.
