Yes it's so dumb, he wants people (mostly his friends) to share it and expand as long as they keep track with the """rules""" of his universe. I'm not a fan of what has been done afterwards, making his mythology too white and black, It goes against the core rule of cosmic horror being so big that such thing as good or bad are meaningless. Also most of his novel come from actual fear and phobia he had.
