I really don't see how just because Komainu were never considered dogs until modern times means we have to go back to considering them lions. It's the same situation as Hecatia's transition from an Anatolian chief deity and sun goddess to being a Titan of Greek mythology, but in modern times. The revisions of history people place on mythological and cultural aspects of their surroundings will change to fit the people, so if someone with so much important like the figurehead of another pantheon of gods to a minor goddess is possible, I don't see why a lion can't become a dog.

Aunn's as much of a dog as Kyouko, who isn't actually a dog either yet the Japanese treat her as one due to her looks alone (yet there is admittedly little to no reason to assume she is one from a mythological standpoint). In short, there's no fucking reason to get so hung-up on Aunn originally being a lion as the culture of a people change the view and positions of things from other regions and the past to better fit their perception of it.
