It's his artstyle. It tends to be pretty polarizing, since he used to draw Ran a bit... bigger than he does now. In fact, he probably started making her more slim in response to what people were saying. Which is a shame, because I'm personally into softer women myself, but he's definitely improved in terms of drawing faces.
