One of the many problems with the idol industry is its poor reputation among people who aren't really into it. You hear about the most crazed individuals on the news, fans who show up to events with hacksaws and try to kill a girl just because he thinks they're meant to be together. That, combined with the perception that it's all manufactured, gives it a bad look. It's why I wasn't surprised when Mori said she didn't like "idol culture" at first until she actually met and befriended one and saw how hard she works for the fans. Most "normal" people have a similar view or opinion, the only difference is that they don't ever meet anyone who challenges it.
