the hobbit movies are only if you like watch mediocre to outright bad films and are not required in any capacity to understand LOTR
as for the novel 'the hobbit', Tolkien wrote it way before LOTR and so its tonally a lot different (think a whimsical fairy tale and then lotr is the same universe but its a somewhat grimdark adult version)
i would recommend you read the novel at some point though, its very short
LOTR movies are obviously in release order (fellowship of the ring, two towers, return of the king)
very technically speaking, the LOTR in novel form is one giant novel, divided into three parts for easier digestion
there are a few changes and omissions from the novel obviously but the movies are a good, especially the extended editions for fellowship and two towers (these more fully flesh out things that were in the book)
