Figure out a list of deal breakers, deal makers, nice to haves, dislikes, etc. and go from there. Personally, just having the mental state of "this species is my waifu, and no one else!" helps. Everyone has a little bit of doubt in their minds about their choice from time to time, so that's why I mention that mental state, just gotta have the discipline to keep at it, and give it a chance to grow on you.

As an example of my own experience, I knew I loved big mofu, I really like lolis (moot point because you can just be like "i want a loli version!"), I like the paws and stuff KC does, so that narrows it down to a few including ratas, but ratas dont have paw hands, but eh that's okay paw hands would be hard to use in practice anyways. and this "flaw" opens up the possibility of another specie of waifu in the future, and that's an abridged version of how I came to waifu ratas!
