ITT: We try to figure out how different geographical regions work in Gensokyo and how current and former beliefs worked on the world.

We know that Hecatia/Hecate exists so the underworld probably does too, along with the rest of the greek pantheon. I don't know how Hecatia still exists if nobody gives her serious faith anymore, aside from reading about greek myths or making artistic work.

Shinki is possibly Lucifer (or Satan), so Makai might either be the realm of Satan, or the Christian hell. Sariel is also found in Makai, meaning fallen angels go to Makai (or Hell, if you accept that). Shinki's name can mean "Originality" (if I'm not wrong) which might be "The first to escape (from god)"

In regions where beliefs are dominant (or maybe depending on what that person believes), souls go to different places. In Gensokyo they can be reincarnated, sent burning in hell or achieve nirvana. I'd assume that in the western world, it's either some nihilstic shit (at least in the modern world) or you go to heaven/hell, with purgatory depending on what you believe, you don't get reincarnated so there's no soul recycling here.
