Not sure why people assume Sanaefags have the impression that Sanae's pure and perfect. We love her for her flaws, too, and as someone stated earlier she indeed does have a bit of an ego (not as much as she did in MoF, but she stills shows signs of it). Makes her much more interesting.

Yeah... no. That's PC-98. We're talking Windows era. Technically the PC-98 games might not even take place in Gensokyo - ZUN didn't pull together the setting until EoSD. It's only stated as being "an Eastern Country".

Um. No. Character development = change throughout the course of one's journey. Making someone ditzy to be cute is just "bad character design".

Backstory plays a very important role in making a character's actions and goals have meaning. Which Sanae has none - to her this whole thing is a fun game. (The motivation which you claim is deeper than the other protagonists').

This is what makes "character development" make sense: a character brings something with them to build off of. "I come from the outside world and wheee this is like a video game" does not allow for much development because it has nothing to do with the world she's now in and how it works. Gensokyo is not the modern-day outside world and hunting down youkai has more reasons behind it than "lawls funtiems!". Relating this to her backstory only results in it having nothing meaningful to connect to, at best, or at worst, 4th-wall-breaking jokes.
