Aya never knew there were lemons in Gensokyo, yet Nazrin’s lemonade wasn’t too sweet and went down smoothly. She reclined in one of the goddess’ many lounging chairs, one hand on her citric drink and the other subconsciously patting the attending mouse. Okina did the same across from her, insisting the tengu stay until nightfall. Her reason being that Tsukasa, if she recognized Aya, could track her movements at the mountain and village and advise her hooded acquaintance accordingly. Begrudgingly, the tengu agreed.

“The little strumpet was using a hidden exit. She has to be in cahoots with Yukari, meaning she’s up to no good. Threatening the Moriyan faith, spreading the lie to the tengu first, the fact Megumu thinks it’ll win brownie points with Yukari: Everything leads back to Tsukasa being the source of this rumor. That tall visitor has to be part of the lie. That’s the loose thread I’ll pull to unravel her entire conspiracy.”

The goddess held a glass of rich, blood-red wine that she swished as she listened to the bird squawking “I see. And how, pray tell, are you certain Tsukasa is the leader behind this? Perhaps Yukari is using her to control the entire mountain. It’d certainly be a mutually-beneficial arrangement.”

“Being a tool isn’t Tsukasa’s role, it’s her cover. Marisa told me about it: Three different people Tsukasa pledged loyalty to and when push came to shove, she ran away from each one. Megumu included.” The tengu chugged her drink down to dregs. With a snap from Okina’s fingers, Nazrin took the glass and walked off, a door appearing in front of her and disappearing with her just as quickly. “The only person that knows her goals is the harlot herself.”

“So between the Sage, daitengu and kuda-gitsune, you trust the trickster?”

Aya paused, mulling over her words. “Trust…? Wait, wait, I understand. All three of these people are liars and schemers. So Tsukasa’s appearance is about as honest as Yukari’s! But being afraid of my enemy’s plans won’t help me: I have to use the facts available to guide my actions. If my foes have armed a trap, I’ll devise my own plan to circumvent them. If I can’t, I’ll make them believe I have a plan good enough to make them hesitant to spring their own!”

The goddess was in awe at how far the girl had extrapolated her insult. The skill of a reporter, she assumed. “Sure, if that works for you. Just keep in mind that killing the fox may not be the best end for either of you. After all, can you bring yourself to kill the girl if you don’t know who she really is?” Ahh, the profound role of goddess, caretaker of Gensokyo’s inhabitants. Even a lowly tengu was worthy of her guidance.

“Why not? If that slut’s stealing Anon’s seed, I’ll wring every drop out of that blonde fox-hussy’s corpse.” There wasn’t a shred of hesitation in her voice.

Of course, Okina couldn’t resist testing her resolve. “And if she is, would you be willing to kill the children taking root in her womb? Sex is procreative, and you aren’t the only one to find the workaround to the contraception. Isn’t that right, Naz-chan?”

The tengu’s mind buzzed. Nazrin was pregnant by Anon too? Myouren temple’s strange additions took on a new meaning. And yet, this wasn’t Aya’s curent focus. Not yet, at least. “I’ll find out if she’s pregnant first, then I’ll decide what to do with her. Before that, I still need to dismantle this rumor at the source. It’s the best thing I can do for Anon and myself to make sure the Moriyans have the power to help him.”

It was frustrating how single-minded the girl had become. Too stupid to recognize the danger she was playing with, still too smart to back off from empty threats. Perhaps some mixture of drugs, magic, pregnancy and puppy love turned her brain to mush. “If you’re really this dead-set on your plans, then by all means—just show me your pictures before you end up on a griddle.”

Until nightfall, Matarajin’s spy went through each and every photograph in painstaking detail with her.
