if you ever see "P" in the name of a japanese font, it means "proportional" (the opposite would be fixed-width/monospace(M))*

if a font has no "P" in its name, it is safe to assume it is monospace (at least for the japanese glyphs; latin glyphs will often be proportional even in monospace japanese fonts)

unlike with latin fonts which are intended to be proportional in most cases, japanese fonts should actually be fixed-width/monospace (i'm sure you've seen those writing grids japanese people use where the page is divided into equal size squares - japanese characters, be they kana or kanji, are all intended to take up the same amount of space)

by the way, ipa and ipap are both outdated fonts, so make sure you get ipaex (which is available as monospace only)

*while "P" usually refers to the spacing of the kana, with the migu fonts the "P" version actually refers only to the latin glyphs and there is a third version of the font denoted as "C" which has proportional kana (+ proportional latin) instead
