i'm only one route finished so take this with the requisite grain of salt, but what i'm finding is the weak point of akikuru is its sheer size and scope of the topics. you start off with a lot of wildly different plot threads which take longer to coalesce into something more than isolated weird infodumps. but when they do it's just as good as ever.

i think the thing that's really missing from his first two games is that they started off rather unassuming, with bizarre events slowly trickling in one by one at a rate that could be dismissed as delusions or swept under the rug with more SoL dick jokes. then when shit hits the fan and the genre shift kicks in it really does pull the rug out from under you, but in a way that makes sense thanks to the foreshadowing.

akikuru plunks you right down into an already bizarre world and setting. i guess the problem is it's TOO weird at the start and thus any subsequent weirdness doesn't get the benefit of that juxtaposition.

that said i'm enjoying it tremendously and like you said, the characters are much more likeable and three dimensional this time. just wanted to try and articulate what's been bugging me about it.
