When people said the characters in this were bi, I thought it would be a situation where they needed human contact, so would just turn to anyone of either sex for intimacy.

If homosexual relations are just as accepted as heterosexual relations, it's no surprise they seem to go after one sex specifically. Because they can generally related to that sex more, and are around that sex more.
