Doll threads are not, and never have been, /jp/ related. There are other boards for this.

They absolutely are otaku related. BJD culture has always been associated with Japanese subculture, especially Otaku, because many of the dolls are based on VN/eroge characters, or characters from popular anime.

Read a wikipedia article for goodness sake!

So that's how it works, huh? Spam pushes threads off the board, and then idiots blame it on janitors deleting them?

I didn't realize people could be that naive. I remember when achieving similar results took shitposters some serious effort. They had to make the thread themselves, nurture it until people came and then delete it in the middle of discussion for maximum effect. And even then someone usually just shrugged their shoulders and made a new one.

That would be ideal but leans to the unuecessarily autistic side. Personally I miss the days when questions and discussion was guaranteed and these threads weren't mindless image dumps. Yes I know this is an "image" board but there's a text field too.

I didn't realize that /jp/ was getting spammed to hell. I used to browse /jp/, but the quality of the threads has gone down so much in recent months, that now I just refresh the doll thread.

I love discussing dolls, and seeing /jp/s beautiful pictures. And the people in these threads are usually swell folk. That's why I didn't notice the thread had 404'd from spam posts.

If someone wants to make a proper thread, I have no qualms. Just post the link here, if you don't mind.

If you use the catalog, you can tell what page the thread is on by pinning it. ALT-clicking it will pin it to the top of the catalog view, after which it will include a page statistic after the Reply/Image statistics.

eg: R:20(+0) / I:11 / *P:0*

When I actively kept these threads gave me an idea of whether or not the thread needed bumping or not.

You might find this useful. The advantage over refreshing a bookmark is you're aware of thread statistics (page, post count, image count, posts since last refresh) and bump status.

- click digest
- click boards
- enter /jp/
- click "save" then "close"

I'll try to explain how the bed is made, with a picture for added help. All measurements are in inches. You should be able to figure out which dimension is which. I didn't start with a firm plan, it pretty much just came together while I worked on it.

The legs are about as simple as it gets: 8x1x1. The long pieces to hold the mattress are 1.5x1x28. There is a 0.5x0.5 notch cut out of them using a table saw. The notch holds the mattress. They end up a somewhat fat L shape. The cross pieces just below the head and foot boards are 0.5x1x18. Again, this is just to hold the mattress. The head and foot boards were done by hand, mostly using a jigsaw and grinder. I sketched Mt. Fuji from a picture on wikipedia, and went from there.

There are a couple of extra cross pieces toward the center, but they are only 0.25 thick. They flex a lot, and are too thin to help support the mattress. I doubt they're necessary.

All corners were rounded with a router. Every piece was sanded, some by hand, some with machine help. Two dowels per joint, with a little bit of glue. This thing is sturdy. Everything starts with the bottom edge 1 inch from the ground. The head and foot boards were done by eye with a height that looked good.

The mattress is just a flat piece of cardboard, and some an 18x28x1 piece of foam. Some white muslin wrapped around makes it look like a mattress. The nice people at the craft store helped me figure out what to use to make a mattress.

If you happen to have an unused toothbrush, you might want to use it to brush her hair. Having gone through the same thing myself with a new Dollfie, it seems like everything else is alright. You may or may not want to get a wig cap, too.

The Nero wig is a tighter fit than most wigs so don't blame yourself if you think you messed it up. I found that gently pushing it on from behind works best and keeps you from handling the delicate bun detail on the back.

The good news is it's not unfixable: you can restore some of the styling with water on your fingers and like >>10225090 said, a toothbrush helps.

I haven't tried this myself but there are reports of lightly adding drops of fabric softener to water to create a makeshift styling oil. This will keep stray strands of hair down.

The wig is somewhat tight, a cap will likely complicate the fit. Fortunately the wig base is a light material that doesn't transfer any dyes so it's not a problem.

>How are Azone's 50cm dolls compared to Dollfie Dreams? Worth it or just stick to Volks?

This is a tough question because it comes down to preference. There are numerous talking points on this subject, with the most significant ones being

1. They use the more posable Obitsu bodies but the tradeoff is the knees and elbows get a knobby, bulky appearance as a result. >>10211944

2. Most feel the painted eyes are a step backward in detail and quality.

3. Depending on the doll some have rooted hair and some have wigs. If you're into heavy customization this might also be an issue.

Personally I love the 50cm dolls they have their own special charm

Not sure if the doll in picture is yours, but the one on the right with the reindeer horns is very cute. She has a slightly boyish face that's quite endearing.

Come to think of it I rarely see male dolls made in the anime style (made with vinyl). Most of the male BJDs I've seen are the resin kind with the more realistic style. Is there any vendors that sell anime styled male dolls?

>how to get it straight/how to actually get the thing on her head
As said before this wig is a special case because of the initial tight fit, but it will get looser and easier with time. My recommendation for this one specifically:

Hold up the bangs so they clear the top of her head
Place the rear of the wig on the back of her head as shown
Press forward into place in increments and check the fit/straightness as you go along. Compensate with how you're applying the wig as necessary to ensure it goes on straight.

Take note that if the wig line lines up with the head seam it may stop progressing forward so using a skewed angle as shown helps.

It really helped me to learn how ISO, aperture, and shutter speed work together and influence each other. I'm still struggling to understand how changing the aperture effects photos.

My camera has a tendency to push the ISO too high when shooting indoors. By forcing it to ISO 200, I get much better shots, but I am forced to use a tripod. Dolls don't move, so it is a good tradeoff.

Also, rule of thirds.

>> No.10231459

>>10231415
Changing aperture = affects depth of field aka bokeh. The lower the number (like f/2.0) the more blurry the background, the higher the number (like f/11) the less blurry the background. Lenses generally have a sweet spot in terms of sharpness and it's usually around f/4 to f/5.6, though I'm not 100% on how this applies to zoom lenses.

And yeah, if you're indoors and shooting dolls just use a tripod and set it to the lowest possible ISO you can.

>Also, rule of thirds.
While it is a good general rule, it's something that should be used sparingly depending on the situation. The last thing you want is an entire album of your photographs following one composition rule.

That would be boring. Have fun, break rules, look at good photographs to take good photographs... That's all I have to say.

>> No.10231770

Very true. I've taken too many photoshoots where I ended up with a whole album of rule of thirds photos. I'm still prone to doing the same thing, but I try and mix it up a bit now. Learning photography is a slow process for me. Especially during winter where I'm at work and stuck inside while the sun is out.

Also, thanks for the advice about aperture. I need to take more practice shots to really get a feel for it.

>Do you have any tips about photographing dollfies? I'm a total newbie.

First and foremost, do it for yourself and for fun. Put more effort into taking pictures and worry less about doing it "right." Over time you will develop an eye for what works for you. It also doesn't hurt to archive instead of delete what you've shot over time so you can see how you progress.

Also, like >>10231287 said. Focus on portraiture and its related techniques and concepts.

>>10232250
>prone to doing the same thing

Sometimes, it helps to second guess the "rule" and ask if it adds value. Rule of thirds is just a way of breaking the instinct of centering the subject but that doesn't mean an centered photo is bad. If you decenter in a predictable manner that leaves empty space with no balance or value like >>10202577, you've done more harm than good.

Excellent question.

Super Dollfie are resin BJDs most of which range in height from 48cm to 60cm. Also referred to as 1/3 dolls.
http://www.volks.co.jp/superdollfie/
Rozen maiden super dollfies are probably the most recognizable ones

Dollfie Dream are also 1/3 but unlike super dollfie are are comprised of vinyl casings over a posable endoskeleton.
http://www.volks.co.jp/en/dollfiedream/index.html/
These are the ones that typically dominate these threads

Dollfie are 1/6 dolls half the size of dollfie dream and super dollfie

Hey guys I've noticed that people that grab the 06 head have the area around the eye (Eyelashes I'm going to guess?) painted on.
Basicly like in the image (Not that exact Style but you get what i mean.)
When people grab these heads they seem to be blank, is there someone you send them to to get them done?
Because I'm sure as hell not going to try and do it myself!
I have not bough a doll yet....
I've been looking at them for about 2 years now, and I'm really hoping to get one when i have enough dosh.
I was planning on buying the basic DD Yukino and swapping her head out.
Also one quick question.
Is there anyone i can commission to make clothes for my Doll?
Say for instance i wanted a certain outfit from an anime, that is not in the actual selection of premade clothes.
I've seen a few examples of these but I'm just not sure where.
Thanks in advance.

There are people that will do faceups for you, yes. The more popular ones have 4+ month waitlists, but sometimes you can luck out.

Regarding outfits, there's a few places that do custom commissions, expect to pay $150-$300-ish per commission.

Mandarake or Yahoo!Japan are you best bets for second-hand dolls. If you're not too picky about which doll you're getting and minor fabric stains (which can easily be removed), check Mandarake.

I've seen slightly-stained Sakuya's going for waaaaay less than their aftermarket price, and she's quite popular (read: expensive).

So what are the general rules of taking care of your doll? I'm considering buying a DD next year and before that I'd like to make sure I don't fuck it up. Anything other than preventing staining the body and the wig drying out?

If you are getting a DDIII, consider investing in CoolCat's dollfie dream modifications. They sell reinforcement parts for the DDIII shoulder joints that are very prone to cracking.

Never touch the face.

Be mindful of where/how your dolls are sitting. Sometimes surfaces can stain too, not just clothing.

Just wondering, what is the general consensus on dolls anyway? Particularly in the US. It seems pretty acceptable over in Tokyo (No sense of awkwardness at all when I walked into the Volks store in Akiba) seeing as how both a large amount of men and women are packed on the sales floor. Can't really imagine it being a good thing in the US at all since dolls still carry the negative connotation of being stupid little cheap plastic toys for little girls.

Honestly I find them fucking beautiful and would love to take my Saber out one of these days for a photoshoot. Just a little curious about what /jp/ has to say.

Sorry if this is a stupid question. Sort of drunk off my ass right now and the question just popped into my head.

It’s still consider unusual even in Japan. But for such a harmless hobby you really shouldn't give a fuck what others think, just take that Saber out for a photo-shoot and enjoy it.

It has been almost three years since I last visited Volks Tachikawa and they still have the same SD Rozen Maiden display up. Poor Shinku is looking a little tired.

I've taken my little Azone PNXS girl out for a hike once this summer. The people on the trail ignored her, and were as friendly as usual.

Also, I took two of my DD's out for a shoot in the mountains while the trees were changing colors this fall. I was mostly alone, but a fellow photographer wandered nearby towards the end of my shoot. He ignored me and tried to stay out of my way.

Don't take your doll to a park full of kids for a photo shoot. That's creepy. Pretty much anywhere else is fine. Most of my male friends are stupid and dislike my girls. My female friends range from loving them to finding them a bit creepy, but they still hang out with me.

Act like you're confident taking your girls out and don't give a fuck, and nobody will bother you. Who cares what they think.

About 6 of my friends are from High School, College, and Boy Scouts. It is a bit tiring visiting them, but I only have to do it a few times a year at most. It helps to move several hours drive from where you grew up.

My friends I met when I moved here don't care about anything. I don't tell people about my girls unless they come over and see them and ask. By that point they know me well enough not to care at all.

I went out to lunch with some college friends today, which was uncomfortable for me, but fun too. They're a married couple now, but were my roommates for one year. I almost told them about my girls when my friend told me she remembered how much I liked Chobits. I don't think they'd mind though: her husband was very into anime and had lots of figures last time I visited their place.
