Be careful choosing a place in Japan. If the place is around 30 years old or more, it is likely not up to earthquake standards, and you could die in the next big earthquake. That's why some places are quite cheap. You should consult a real estate agent about safety of older buildings.
The expensiveness of Japan is pretty over exaggerated though. If you live out of Tokyo or other big cities, you can live quite cheaply, as long as you don't expect to live exactly the same as you did in your home country. I live about 40 min out of Tokyo, and while I make less than I did back home, I live quite comfortably and have enough money to support my hobbies well enough.
Also in my experience the real estate agents are quite nice as long as you speak Japanese

Me too, there's something I really like about them. But it's impossible to find a good one because any apartment so small is probably a rundown shithole or in a terrible part of town, two things that would prevent me from taking it easy.

And despite the fact that practically all of my hobbies are Japanese in origin, they're god damned expensive whether I live in or out of the country, which is one of the few things that makes me want to live there.
