Old thread: >>10329661

Talk about Touhou and other STGs. Chat with fellow players, blog about your progress, plead for help on problematic spots, and so on.

-

We had some challenges in the latest thread.

Winners for scoring were:
>>10330487 - 2,748,801,840 (Normal)
>>10330623 - 2,617,850,160 (Lunatic)

Winner of special was:
>>10337803 - 25/25 Spell Cards captured
(I doubt this was your first 1cc!)

Congratiulations to the winners, and great job from everyone else as well. Thank you for participating!

-

New challenges for this thread!

Scoring challenge: PCB Hard and Extra

1. Every shot-type is welcome
2. The run must be done within the thread, no old scores.
3. Either screenshots or replays will be required for posts with scores.

Special challenge: Grazing in Ten Desires Normal and Lunatic!

1. Every shot-type is welcome.
2. The run must be done within the thread, no old runs.
3. In the case of a tie (similiar amount of graze), the one with higher score wins.
4. Either screenshots or replays will be required for posts with scores.

You have time for until this thread ends (i.e. posts start auto-saging)

Happy dodging!

Regarding challenges for the next thread, it'd be nice to hear your ideas about them. In the case there will be no requests, I'll try to come up with something relatively close to what people seem to be playing within the threads.

10356350

I just started playing 2hu a day and a half ago, and so far my biggest accomplishment is using one continue on easy mode in Imperishable Night. Been spending quite a bit of time practicing Eirin's spell cards and have captured all her regular spell card in less than five practice attempts EXCEPT Esoterica "Astronomical Entombing". Is it easier to destroy as many familiars as you can (working right to left or vice versa/destroying center), are there certain ones that are more troublesome than the rest, or would it be best to tough it out and focus fire entirely on Eirin herself? For reference, I can get around 50 seconds into card, mostly dying to carelessly running into bullets due to trying to go balls deep into destroying familiars, which is my fault anyway.

>> No.10356366

>>10356350
Definitely destroy the familiars, I usually start with the center, but that might just be preference.

I'd like something in IN just because that's the only game I've practiced, but I guess it's also fun to branch out sometimes. I'll probably try PCB for this thread, since I'm pretty sure ten desires doesn't work with wine

>> No.10356438

>>10356017
I'd like to request something shorter than a full game for next time, especially since Touhou scoring pretty much always involves taking as much time as possible on noncards and some spell cards. Honestly I find it kinda boring...
The all-cards-captured wasn't so bad since it didn't involve any milking.

>> No.10356444

>>10356350
I've found it most convenient to attack familiars until she gets to around 2/3 to 1/2 HP. By then you've got most of the middle ones cleared out, and she's taking full damage so you may as well just take her down the rest of the way rather than worrying about the sides.

>> No.10356447

TD worked fine for me on Wine. Here's a (pretty bad) replay of me using it: http://replays.gensokyo.org/download.php?id=20346
And I did get the vpatch to work after that as well.

Try the harder modes first and/or Shoot the Bullet/Double Spoiler.
Get as far as you can, when you game over, save a replay and check what you've done wrong and look for safespots and what not.
When you're COVERED in bullets, just focus on your hitbox. Don't bomb so much like other asstards tell you to, you'll never remember the patterns and you'll just become prone to messing up more and more.

>> No.10356534

Okay /jp/, I want to explore this Touhou culture which you guys seem so fond of, but I'm not sure where to start. I've heard some recommendations to start on the 6th game, is this what you all would recommend? Also should I bother going raw if I can't read Japanese quickly/easily yet?

You'll get that from any Touhou game, and more easily too since there's a bit of a resistance with new players to using bombs in MoF since it reduces your power, while there isn't any detriment in other (non-SA) games other than having fewer bombs.

MoF is a bad recomendation, because in earlier games like EoSD PCB and IN you can die from random collision which are inexistant from MoF. Also MoF gives you bad habits.
Best game to begin are PCB and EoSD. PCB because it's easy and EoSD because you don't have to worry about bullshit gimmick. Also there are far less bullets in EoSD than in IN. spellcards are easier too. The only trap with PCB is that the difficulty gap hits later and is larger. Stage 5 in PCB is ridiculously hard if you compare it to stage 5 MoF.

An intermediate player may have 1cc'd some of the easier games on Lunatic (like bomb spammed MoF) but does struggle in general with the patterns and has a hard time 1ccing, whereas a pretty good played would be more consistent, and would capture at least half of the spellcards (but probably more) in a run. Just beat EoSD on normal with Reimu A after about a week of sporadic practice on EoSD. Feels pretty good, first 2hu shooter I've beaten now besides TD. At first it felt like the lack of a hitbox on focus would get me killed repeatedly but I guess you just kinda internalize it and know where it is after a while, wasn't too much of a problem. Also, are hitboxes a little smaller in EoSD compared to the later games? Felt like I made a lot of dodges that I shouldn't have survived.

That's just about every, "decent" western player ever. No matter how good they get, they always say that they're terrible. It's an ego boost thing, they say that they're terrible and then the players who are below them tell them that they're not, which in turn gives them a confidence boost.

I think it's mostly for the ego boost as others have mentioned. In addition, most western players are just wasting talent, not effort. Most of those kinds of players don't put more than 2000 of hours into a games. They spend a couple hundred hours at most, get above average scores and that's it. I seriously doubt anyone with thousands of hours of practice would ever want to call their efforts "shit" or "bad." I haven't seen this with Japanese players, and I'm hoping that western players that put in that much effort wouldn't do that, too.

>> No.10360560

>I haven't seen this with Japanese players, and I'm hoping that western players that put in that much effort wouldn't do that, too.
I have seen it with some Japanese players. The only difference is that they don't rub it in wherever they go. Also, it should be noted that Touhou has not been known in the West for as long as in Japan. Having that amount of time in a game is revered even there. The kinds of players that have that amount of time are usually ones that have been competing in the older games since they were new.

>> No.10360641

No one seriously thinks the entirety of their playtime is nothing but shitplays, thousand or hundred hours. If they do, their standards are impossibly high, or they should start putting in more effort. Patting yourself on the back for achieving a goal that you set, even if above average or not impressive compared to the best, is fine. Even if others may think these goals take no genuine effort, effort is something not anyone can simply commit to. People deserve to feel happy even for the little (relative to the "best") achievements. For instance, you don't see anyone extremely disappointed about their first 1cc. It is a very satisfying and exhilarating moment.

As for players who feel negative about their scores, it shouldn't be automatically dismissed as an attempt to boost one's ego. Whoever wants to make that call should be knowledgeable about how the scoring system for that particular game works. Some mistakes that rarely happen will sometimes happen on your best run, and that is truly a shitplay the player is allowed to feel bad about.

A player should be unhappy with what he sees as a mistake, because he would otherwise become complacent. However, seeing every single thing as a mistake would be self-loathing. Personally, truly egotistical players do not know the meaning of "mistake." They'll use it whenever it seems convenient, and not when a true mistake has been made.

I talk to an awful lot of Touhou fans on a regular basis and only around 10 of them can 1cc some of the games on normal. 2 of them can 1cc them on hard though I've only seen replays from one. None have even thought about lunatic.

This is why I ignore and in all honestly couldn't give a fuck about the opinions of anyone here who have the nerve to call people bad when they're not.
Normal and to a lesser extent hard looks easy to me now, but I don't forget how much time I had to invest to get my 1cc's of those modes. Especially my first time playing the games which took me almost 2 weeks to 1cc EoSD (my first shmup) on normal.
I don't know of a single other genre that has ever taken me 2 weeks to beat a 25 minute long game on normal mode like that. Infact I don't hardly ever play any games on normal these days, I always go for the most difficult option and still end up doing fine.

LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 wine vpatch.exe
I guess that you still need to run "setcap cap_sys_ptrace+epi /usr/bin/wineserver" (from wiki) to allow the patch to modify game executable.

Haha, baby steps, mang. We've all been there. If you're dying to spells I recommend you try grinding them a bit in practice mode. Don't allow yourself to get tunnel vision; I noticed that as I've improved a bit, when I open my eyes and look past my immediate area it becomes far easier to dodge and avoid kill zones. I just realized today I was overcomplicating the fuck out of one of the stage 6 boss' cards, make sure you're not doing that on any of Seiga's.

Better players can probably help more here but I think it's best to memorize when the fairies that drop health/ bomb fragments appear, save your trance for them, and trance at the last moment to kill them and grab the fragments. They fill faster in trance. Sometimes you just gotta blow them on boss spells or "oh shit" situations though, I guess.

My main problem I am noticing is being too greedy with items. I end up dying trying to grab a spirit. I also need to stop being cocky. I'm always at point blank range against Yuyuko to get more blue spirits, and end up dieing stupidly. >Also, I need to bomb. I'm hoarding them and they are being put to waste.

Yeah that's something I'm kinda struggling with myself. I've heard some people say it's cool to bomb your way through tough cards from the beginning while others tell you that it creates bad habits and that you should always try to conserve for death-bombs or notorious spell cards. Curious if any better players have an opinion on that.

Besides that just sounds like memorization mostly. Once you learn the stages and boss spell/ non-spell progressions, you'll learn when it's safe to jump up to grab items/ spirit orbs post-wave and when it's best to let them go.

I think you also learn smarter risk taking over time, I definitely find myself letting stuff go that I might have died trying to grab in the past, also I guess you get more confident on bomb conservation so you have them for the really tough spots. UFO feels like a really good game to build risk-taking habits because you'll get raped if you make a lot of dumb grabs for UFOs.

>I'm always at point blank range against Yuyuko
You've probably noticed shooting at point-blank does more damage too, I think it's usually called shotgunning. I think most people would consider it essential, along with shit like streaming and deathbombing.

Not the same anon, but my thought on bombs has always been pretty negative unless I'm going for a 1cc. I'm very much used to bombing = absolutely murdering your score from the pachi series. And not only that, Ketsui doesn't even let you see the ever so awesome Ura loop if you bomb.

And if I ram my head against difficult patterns in practice without bombing, my general dodging skill increases. I always used to bomb the shit out of everything, even in practice, and wondered why I wasn't improving at all.

The cherry routes are all fucked up in stage practice at that point anyway due to decreased cherry item value, so it isn't really going to help you out with scoring in full runs except for during the boss portion maybe.

I've only put maybe three hours into scoring(stage practice) so far, and it's already making me want to bash my head against a brick wall. I'm sure it's one of those things that get more fun as you play it more, as I feel the same way each time I'm presented with a higher challenge. I guess I just feel bad because of how long it took me to be able to begin scoring.

Hmm... For the survival players, playing only or mainly stage practice might make sense. Survival in Touhou, unless you restrict yourself, is generally pretty easy. The dodging however, not so much. Therefore a survival player might be more inclined to stick to stage practice so that he/she may play the later stages more rather than playing full runs which would involve being bored with the first three stages.

Even score players will benefit greatly from spending most of their time in practice modes to develop as high consistency as possible on the more difficult to pull off tricks. However, Touhou's practice methods are unfortunately quite lackluster in case of games like UFO or PCB so those are exempt from this.

Well you asked for the optimal UFO route and you got it. Shin is one of the few people in the world who is actually good at UFO so if you want to be good, copy that. You won't need the reds.

If what you were asking for is a survival UFO route, I can only recommend one thing. Fucking don't.

Improvize that stuff. You will get an insane amount of resources if you just stick to all red UFO's. If you are in a situation with a lot of fixed colored UFO tokens you should summon a rainbow one since that will release a ufo upon being filled up as well as one upon being destroyed meaning you can almost get one additional Red summoning out of it.

Don't plan too hard and keep playing. It's better for you.

I see far too many people complain about making mistakes in their UFO chains and restarting over it. That's why I suggest not bothering with learning UFO routes and just improvizing them.

>> No.10370882

Liking something has to come naturally, not something you force yourself through for merit like "lol HURDEST GAME" or "everyone says its the best!!!" When you genuinely like something, you will want to play it more, thus improving more. Alternatively, someone is allowed to not like a game because they think it's shit and not play it. With the lack of practice due to not playing it, they will, undeniably, suck at it. That's how it's more likely to be, "I don't like the game, consequently I suck at it" rather than "I suck at it therefore I don't like the game." That is especially the case with UFO, it's not his fault if he finds it so boring that he can't force himself to play it much.
